I like my MIO Sport. It cost me only $30 and it does not require a chest strap. I wanted to know my HR so I could exercise in an exertion range that helps me lose weight at the optimum rate while cycling.
But, after a month of use it stopped giving me a heart rate reading. The little heart icon just continued to pulsate. Then it gave excessive readings in the 200 bpm range. Then it gave no reading again.
With some experimentation and observation I determined the thin white plastic film covering the inside of the watch's back had been pressed too much and was not isolating the electrical charge on the battery holder from the metal back plate of the watch. I inserted a disc of paper cut to fit between the battery holder and the watch back. The watch works perfectly now.
There is one word of caution. A small metal spring on the watch module must reach the metal back plate and make electrical contact with the metal back if the watch is to give a reading.
The Sport is a discontinued model. It may be that the problem I had has been corrected in newer models. I do not know.
