Fifty Plus (50+) - Here for real :)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hi,
So in another thread a local 50+ guy said I could post here legitimately now. :D
This is what I built for my milestone birthday:

A couple of small issues to resolve and I'll post more and better pics. :)

Whoa, I guess your back is still pretty flexible. Those bars are low! Is it carbon? I didn't know Serotta had carbon fiber frames. Nice.
Welcome, and Happy Birthday. :bday:
Nice bike.

Cleave has assembled the anti-Tom Bombadil bike.
A different Tom Bombadil in a different dimension is having a blast on this bike.
Happy Birthday! Nice bike!!!
Happy birthday and welcome. Used to live in LA and San Diego. Moved to the Bay area last year.

Nice bike (bikes). Many of those are worthy of being hung on the wall as art.

Happy B day. The Zipp wheels... they are carbon? How's the braking on them? I've only ridden carbon wheels once and the braking left we a little worried that I'd be able to stop in time. How is it with these wheels?
Nice bike. Happy Birthday and welcome to BF 50+.
Happy Birthday! That's a heck of a nice bike! I can tell you're a youngster though - those low bars would cut my rides short!

Nice garage door, and welcome! (What's that thing hiding the view of the garage door?)

Beautiful bike. My only concern is the yellow stripe just above the seatpost clamp - shouldn't that be red???
;)
And welcome aboard!

Drop looks about right to my eye. Bars too high make a bike handle funny. Bars look just right in relation to the front wheel, too. Generally looks perfect setup to me! Bars rotated forward from what I use, but that's really a personal taste & fit issue.
Nice ride!
Hi All,
Thanks for the warm welcome and the compliments on the bike. :)

My back is less flexible than it when I was younger, but I guess it's still flxible enough. The Attack is Serotta's "low-end" custom carbon frame.

And what is a normal Tom Bombadil bike? :)

The 1975 Bianchi is an art piece in our stairway to the 2nd floor. I restored it in 1985 and I've ridden it maybe 20 miles since and haven't ridden it at all in the last 10 years.

Braking is a little different though IMHO it's mostly feel. You have to make sure that you use appropriate pads with the wheels to get decent braking.

;)
It should be. I ran out of red tape. Will be buying some this week to replace the yellow. :)
Good going Cleave and welcome, beautiful bike.

Very nice looking racer, Cleave. Red makes it look like the bike is supposed to go fast. What is the setup of your cassette and chainrings?

Very nice.
My wife rode an Attack at the local Serotta demo day and hasn't stopped saying good things about it.

My comment about it being an anti-Tom Bombadil bike was based in part upon the cogs. His are very large in the front and very small in the back. I like having one front ring that is smaller than at least one rear cog.
His looks like along the lines of 53/39 with 12-23.
Can you prove your 50?
Until you do so, I'd suggest that you do not ride such a fine machine until you prove your honesty.
Feel free to send it to ME for safe keeping. I'll return it when you prove your true age.
Welcome to the down hill side of life.

Getting that thought myself. 34/27 is not low enough for comfort up slopes.

Cleave came to one of our rides when we climbed Hwy 39 from Duarte to Angeles Crest, gaining about 5000 feet in less than 30 miles. He wasn't the fastest climber there, but I only know this from hearsay, he dropped me at the first part of the climb and took off. He doesn't use extra low gears, like I do. He was on his red Look that day.

Cleave - welcome to the oldster board! Gorgeous bike - beautifully put together. So what are your thoughts having know ridden it? Would you change anything?
Oh yeah - Happy Birthday you whipper snapper you!

OK, it's definitely anti-Tom. The front is a 52 X 39 with an 11-21 in the back. That wheel setup is for criteriums. I use the same wheels for all of my racing but my "biggest" cassette is a 12-25.

Like Barbara Barrie, I have a passport. :D

I never drop anyone on purpose. :) I have a pace that I have to get into mentally when I approach any climb. I may end up getting slower but I initially set my mind and heart rate to a pace that I think that I can sustain. :o

Well, I don't know if I'd change anything yet as I haven't ridden it yet. :o
Still waiting to work out a couple of minor issues but I plan on riding it this coming weekend and I can hardly wait. :)

My two most used gears are 36:17 and 36:20. Your lowest gear of 39:21 would lie between them.
And let's not even talk about how the handlebars are set up.
If that bike got close to my bike, my bike would grovel and slink away.

Serottas are built just a few miles up the road from me - really like the looks of it. I had been leaning towards another brand as I thought thier paint jobs were a little drab - put this sets me straight. Serotta makes one heck of a nice bike and all us red bike riders know red bikes are faster.
Sweet ride! Happy birthday and welcome to the 50+ forum.

My alma mater, RPI, is just a few miles south of Saratoga Springs and that is when I first met Ben in the late 1970s. On the Attack you get a choice of two colors with the graphic design that you see in my photo. With some of Serotta's other custom frames you get more paint and graphics choices but for some reason, most of the Serotta's that I see are fairly conservative.
As for me, I prefer red bikes. :)

As a dad of two reasonably good kids, I am very impressed that you have four kids and still find time to ride. :) Also, your taste in bicycle manufacturers is impeccable. :D
