i just had my first sprint tri this weekend and got to cross it off the list i made a couple months ago. :D
the list also includes another sprint tri, a 155 mile weekend charity ride (with my dad), 2 half marathons and capping it all off with an olympic tri. just added it all up and that would make for $600 more for event registration alone. being a poor college student isnt so much fun right now. :o
now i get to figure which ones i need to omit from the list.
have any of you had a similar experience? have a ton of motivation and high hopes only to get shot down by a lack of funds?
thanx for listening to my rant.

yep all the time, I can not wait to graduate.
I haven't paid to ride my bike anywhere...yet.
Uhhh, I graduated a long time ago and still have that problem. What makes you think it gets better after graduation?

No truer words have been spoken BCI. See, the interesting thing about money is that the more you make the more you'll owe. You just buy bigger and better stuff, that and one day you will grow tired of Ramen.
If your having trouble saving money while in college I suggest dropping your SO, I have never found a money pit quite like my SO. I would have put all the money I've spent on her into a CD or some other form of modest return, well quite frankly I wouldn't be the rider of inexpensive bicycles. She's worth every penny though.

Ain't that the truth. Working for the city just doesn't cut it. I've got bikes that need some lovin', including a Surly LHT frame that has been glaring at me for the year and a half I've owned it without building it up to tour on

I'll tell ya what, it's a blast doing organized rides! The support and all if it's properly done more than compensate for the expense involved, with well marked routes, SAG support, rest stops and a post ride group dinner. ;) They're generally worth it. :)
EDIT: It's also especially fun if you have a bunch of friends doing it too ;)

I've never done a supported ride, but it sounds like a lot of fun (my bro, who lives in Boulder, always sings the praises of the elephant rock ride). Self-support works too, though. Something for OP to think about -- you can do it, you just can't do it with banners and people handing you orange wedges.

Yep, I've done supported, unsupported, group, solo, self planned, unsupported fully self sufficient touring....it's all good to me! I do enjoy the organized rides though generally....very nice change of pace. I'd highly recommend them!
My vacations each year are always a fully supported week long ride in some place I've never been. I save all year long in order to make these rides. What a great way to spend a week. Doing long rides, on new roads, seeing new country and making new friends. Nothing finer than that!
