You're not a cager if you're driving a convertible...and you're playing music that I like when I pull up next to you on my bike.

Once you're in a car, you're a cager. Feel free also to wear devil horns and steal big lolly pops from small babies you see, or maybe tie a helpless maiden to railroad tracks and wait for the B+O 2:15.

Cages don't allow the thing "caged" to enter and exit freely. It's a stupid thing to call motorists, IMHO. Plenty of cyclists seem to exhibit a cager mentality which is the problem, not the vehicle so much.

What if it has a roll cage? If there is no roll cage, cqan you still be a cager?

It seems some cyclists don't have a sense of humor. I find the term "cage" hilarious, although I think cars look more like aquariums. Convertibles are aquariums without the top.

Some of you are interpreting "cage" and "cager" too literally. Not all cages are for entrapping something. Consider a water bottle cage... (note that it too has no top, like a convertible).

There is no good word that encompasses all motor vehicles that have a protective body.
But cager is an effective term to describe one who drives such a vehicle. I don't understand the animosity some seem to feel towards its usage.

maximan1, do some research. Cager is a term for people who play basketball.

The "cage" in Cager isn't describing the physical vehicle so much as the mentality of some users. They are stuck inside their own little bubble and fail to see things as rational human beings.

It's called being a ****** bag, people. Cager is just less offensive to state in public.

Been pondering this myself, and having owned three soft top Jeeps over the years, I would have to say, "Yes, a person can drive a convertible and be a cager."

However, when speaking of the term "cager" as a mentality, I have seen a guy on a Harley show this
attitude, and would have called him a cager to his face if he hadn't used the power of his machine to run away. As Moron Cager does after harassing a cyclist.

It is a term intended to express animosity. I'm pretty sure I've never seen it intended as a compliment.

I worded my reply badly in #13. What I should have said (meant to say) is, "Yes, a person driving a convertible is a cager."

I'm sure someone dedicated enough could figure a way to have a planetary gear system drive an internal hub and have a multi-speed unicycle if they tried hard enough. On topic, I agree that cager is only used as an insult, typically by people with an axe to grind.

On the first day of spring last year I did a survey of who was out and smiling and only two prominent groups showed up…. Cyclists and people driving a convertible.

Personally I think as a group convertible drivers are better then the average motorists,
