well i've been cycling since april i think. Can't remember when the snow finally melted. Since then i've been cycling on a pretty good training schdule, and this past weekend i put it two the test with my 1st road bike race. Big event too. Saturday was a 8km time trial. Basically up a hill down a hill and back again. I finished middle of the pack. The next day it was a 31km hill climb.

That link is the cross map, and elevation chart. The race happend at mount chokai. in Akita-ken japan. The race didn't end at the mount top, just somewhere halfway up.....i'm not sure. Once again i finished middle of the pack.

those are the winning times for each stage and total time.

my standings were, time trial overall 153 out of 250, but 18 out of 50 in my group, and 2nd stage total 1:39 , 37 out of 50, and overall 253 out of 456. Yeah more people opted to just do the hill climb.

My mindset when i raced was just to beat the time limits. You had 2:30 to finish the race. well, 1:10 to make the 17km mark, 2:00 to make 20km, and 2:30 to make the full 31km.

I saw a ton of expensive and amazing bikes there.(though i've come to hate those people who had triple cranks.) At the end of the race the only thing i really thought about was revamping my training routine, did even think about upgrading my bike at all.

so hopefully next year, my work contact ending and all, i'll be able to race one more time before i head back to the states.

cheers
dave

Dammit, I down loaded the Japanese charater files thinking that it would allow my browser to translate the Japanese to English! How friggin' stupid is that!?! I kill myself sometimes. LMAO. :D

Actually there are many cyclists here, but mainly in southern japan. I live in what is called the inaka....or the butt end of the country side. So the fact there were 456+riders in the full course hill climb was amazing. There was also a half course race and a mountain bike race....no idea how many riders.

sadly shimano parts are more expensive in japan, almost a third more expensive than the states.

Shane, there is a website that allows you to help translate japanese websites, not sure what the url is........try to get it to you later.

Congrats on your first hill-climb race. If you really want to blow your mind, try the Norikura HC race next year. 3,000 riders on the highest public road in Japan. The 22km climb starts at 1,400m and ends at a weather station at 2,800m. The view of thousands of riders snaking their way up the switchbacks below is amazing.

Be quick, though, the roster fill up in 24 hours after they start accepting entries on May 1. Everyone after that gets turned away.

Of course it goes downhill - after you get to the top you get to turn around and go back.

is that because of the huge tax imposed on local products?
