Well it was a great ride, nice to meet more BF folks. The weather was still warm but much nicer then it had been. We had a large turnout at the start. After climbing hwy 9 there were several different options, this is where the group began shrinking as some had to get home. Most of us continued on to Hwy 84. We had a bit of carnage on 84, but nothing serious.;) Stats were about 47 miles and 4800 ft of climbing. Three days in a row of riding for me and my body is exhausted. Thanks all for a great day.
Sean
man, what a turnout. can't wait for the pictures.
edit: oh and what a crash. I'm just glad he wasn't seriously hurt.

No, you first! :)
What gave it away Steve? Today was supposed to be a recovery day for me. Instead I did the hwy 9 climb at tempo. You guys were carrying a nice pace, but too much for me today.;)

I just want to thank everyone that came out for this ride ... it was great!
Awesome turnout, first of all. I didn't make a tally, but I think there were about 25 riders who came out to the ride.
Pohlf came out for the ride, but notice the front was flat. After fixing the rim strip, and putting in a new tub, that popped too. There was a hole in the sidewall ... Frank's not riding today. Sorry about that ... maybe next time.
One of the biggest attractions for this ride was the roving SAG for this ride. Taxi777 (Pete) was going to be our SAG for the entire ride, but we didn't see him. We waited and waited, but we thought we'd better just head off, so off we went.
We had a nice regroup at the top of Mt. Eden (thanks guys). The group wasn't too spread apart, which is nice, considering we had such a large group. Onwards towards Pierce, a granny gear climb. On our way up, we were passed up by SteveE and a few of his AltoVelo guys. Nice to see him out on the road. We said hi briefly ... very briefly. They are just fast up the hill.
Climbing up Hwy 9, I rode at my comfortable hill climbing pace (which is not all that fast). About 1 mile from the top, a bunch of us stopped for a brief breather (pee, stretching, etc ...) It was also a good mid-climb opportunity to regroup some of those in the back of the pack. There is nothing worse than being last, and no familiar face in sight. I figured, as a ride leader, I should try to avoid that. Everyone seemed to appreciate that ... I hope.
Finally, top of the climb, and the group, instead of stopping at the four corners, decided to regroup at the fire station, which is fine. It is just over the first hill on Skyline anyways.
Once there, everyone was ready for the group picture. Looks like we got there just in time. Caught up with Taxi777. It turns out they got really lost on the way to the ride, but at least they made it. Pete did take pictures of a few of us climbing up Hwy 9. He proceeded to take more pics waiting for everyone to get to the corner of Skyline and Page Mill.
At this point, some of us decided to head straight down on Page Mill (shorten the day), while the rest of us continued northbound, and head down on 84. The ride along Skyline to 84 was nice. They were rollies, and the downhill allowed you to pick up some really good speeds.
Right turn onto Hwy 84, for some more fun downhill descending. I was trailing behind a few others, and I was trying to shorten the gap. Then, all of a sudden, someone pulls over to the right. I asked if everything was ok, then the response was "someone went down" ... How is that possible? There was only 4 inches of shoulder room. Looked over the railing, and AlainP went over, hit a tree. He, and his bike went over the railing. Apparently, his front wheel was wobbling, and the next thing you knew, he was flying over the railing. AlainP is okay. He was going to ride on, but a good samaritan, in a van, volunteered to drive him back to the start. We all encouraged him to take the ride, and after some hesitation, he decided to take the ride ... thanks AlainP.
So that was exciting. The rest of the ride went through without a hitch. AlainP was there at the parking lot, and he wound up with a scrape on his finger, and he says he's okay. We'll see in a few days, after the bruises set in.
It was an amazing ride, all things considered. Yes, it was hot, but not as bad as you would think. The breeze on Skyline felt really comfortable. And having Carvell Ice Cream at the end of the ride??? What more can you ask for?
Thanks everyone for coming out. This was truely another NorCal BF success. These BF events are turning out to be a lot of fun.
See ya all next time.

To sum it all up, at least for me:
The best way to get better at cycling is to go on a ride with people much stronger than yourself and get destroyed.
I got very handily destroyed today. It was wonderful.
Thank you all.

Keep doing it and before long you will be doing the destroying.;)
What gave it away Steve? Big guy, LGBRC, and knowing BigSean was going to be on the NorCal BF ride, maybe? Heard you yell something unprintable as you were coming in to the CDF station. Heard you got stung by a bee and you are allergic. Not a good thing but I guess it couldn't have happened at a better place.
We did pretty much the same route. I rode from Cupertino up to Los Altos to meet my riding partners. Then we rode back Foothill and picked up the route you rode. At the bottom of 84, we turned right on Portola Rd. and thru Portola Valley.
After a Jamba Juice in Los Altos, I rode back home and chatted with one of your teammates from LGBRC - Warren.

That makes sense. Turns out that it was a yellow jacket and it bit me instead of a sting. Fortunately I was able to finish the ride. Funny thing is I hadnt been stung in 20 years, now thats twice in the last 2 weeks.

Thanks to Ron for organizing this ride. I had a great time and enjoyed meeting all of the riders. I cut off at Page Mill and got home early. It was a great experience for me since I spend most of my time riding on my own. I look forward to some more group rides in the future. I'm sorry to hear about the crash but glad to hear it didn't sound too serious, although any crash is serious.

Great day guys and gal. It was a really nice turnout and the day turn out pretty pleasant... not too hot (or was it the shade that spared us?). I would have taken more pics but my camera must have wedged on and the battery drained, bummer. Extra credit goes to Ms Incredible for riding to the ride start for an extra 20+ miles... I think SV_Commuter did extra credit too. Thanks to Pete (taxi777) and Mrs. Pete for SAGging, taking pictures, and baking cookies for us. They were DELICIOUS.
And sorry Ms Incredible for crashing into you... that was below average. If anything needs repairing on your bike, let me know.
Thanks everyone.
Let's take a stab at this, left to right.

Thanks, Ron, for organizing - riding out that way is always a treat. I wish I felt better during the ride. I'm also one of the ones who turned off at Page Mill - now I know why I didn't feel well. I'm running about a 102 fever - yuck. Time for a nap before my ex. drops the kids off.

Good to meet some of you and see some of you again. I rode from Santa Cruz and joined the group at the top of Pierce. The cookies were really good. It's always fun to have a pack in front of you on the descents like on Skyline. Was that Jobst Brandt at 84 and Skyline? At 84, I left the group and headed down to the coast, where it was a lot cooler. The tailwind was pretty nice too. About 2-3 miles from home, I bonked, and was light-headed and could only think about stuffing my face once I got home, but I managed to get home at around 3pm with about 107 miles and about 7000 ft.

Was that Jobst Brandt at 84 and Skyline?I'm pretty sure that it was Jobst. I saw him just as our group hit the bottom of 84 and made the sharp right onto Portola. Tall old guy, no helmet, no water bottles, riding a yellow old school bike (Frejus, if I am not mistaken).

BTW she thinks your all crazy and felt perfectly at home! I wasn't completely happy with the pictures, light was too overhead should have brought my dark lenses. excuse + excuse + waaahhh... At the split Steel Blue was shot and wanted to sag, but his friend talked him into the downhill. We had his shoes hat and thought to maybe sag him at the bottom. So we went with the split. I heard about the crash! If we had our phones we could have sagged him in, really sorry about that. If I do It again I'll be more prepared. Can't wait to ride with the big group though.

I think so. You passed us, wearing a NorCal BF jersey riding solo, just before the top at Saratoga Gap? I had a momentary impulse to chase you down but thought better of it. One of the guys in our group was trying to stay in Zone 2 today and we had done a good job keeping together up to the point. He did two Beat the Clock TTs and the B-Ride (Coastal Classic Route) on Saturday, the A-Ride on Sunday, and then the ride we did today.

By the way, where was the Pinarello?
Well, that's part of my obsessive compulsive behavior. I can't ride/dial in the Pinarello until I dial in the (aluminum) Bianchi. If you noticed, there was a crazy click when I pedaled out-of-the-saddle. It's been driving me nuts and until I figure it out, I can't focus on dialing in the Pinarello (it's mostly setup.. just need to do some saddle fore-aft tweaks and install the computer). Anyone else OCD like that?

:D
Thank you, Ron, for arranging such a successful turnout and to Taxi777 and wife for the delicious cookies and SAG support. It was really fun to meet and ride with everyone.
As far as what happened to me... I keep replaying it in my head and, from what I can recall, my front tire began skidding so I eased up. But then the rear tire started getting squirrelly too, and all the while, I was headed straight for the vehicle barrier. By and by the time I regained traction, I was up and over the barrier immediately thinking to myself, "This is NOT good!" While on my descent, I remember taking a mental snapshot of the landing zone and noticed a lot of trees. Since I was still clipped in, my body started rolling and my head turned opposite the fall line leaving me blind to any potential impacts. Soon thereafter, I heard a thud on my helmet, which I now believe was the ground, and felt a sudden WHACK along my right, rear hip and ribs which was one of those big trees. When I finally came to a stop, I did a quick self-assessment and determined that since I was conscious, still had the use of my limbs, and wasn't coughing up blood or having trouble breathing, I should start trying to make my way back to the road. I humbly apologize to anyone who may have heard me screaming obscenities on the way down and up. Immediately after my fall, some strangers, who I believe were drivers who had witnessed the acrobatics, tried to help me up. One stood on my left and reached over to grab my right side which had taken the brunt of the impact at which time I let out a short muffled scream. I immediately thought they were doing more harm than good but I do appreciate their efforts. I do remember Jin (jinws), Tony (mtnwalker), David (sweetnsourbks), and Ron (spingineer), who showed a lot of concern and were quick to lend a helping hand and made the quick decision to accept the good samaritan's offer to take me back down which, I believe, was the correct decision. Thank you!
And, many thanks to Jorge and Alicia, the good samaritans who, out of the kindness of their heart, took me all the way to the starting point. Out of my confusion, I failed to get their contact information. I offered to pay for gas and their lost family time, to which they refused, but I did leave them my business card in hopes I can repay them somehow.
My apologies to the group for not saying bye but after jumping David's car (sorry about your mishap on the way home), I thought the short walk over to Carvelo's would've been more than I could bear. I just wanted to get home and shower since I was covered with dirt and leaves. Anyway, I got home and, as I dreaded, I stiffened up and the first step out of the car was a doozy. It was a sight for my wife and son to see as I was almost to the point of crawling back into the house. After cleaning up, my wife brought me over to the hospital where the doctor prescribed me a rib belt, a cane, and some meds and told me the pain would get worse in the next 1 or 2 days . Needless to say, I'm gonna be off the bike for a while healing and trying to figure out what I should have done differently. I suspect, one day, I'm gonna go back to that turn and, hopefully, negotiate it successfully.

Alain,
As long as you are okay, that's what's important. Everyone who's been in an accident of some kind (on a bike) always tries to recall all the events leading up to the accident. All I can say is take this all to heart, and store it as an experience (one that you'll most likely never forget). I was trying to close the gap between myself and you, and then all of a sudden, I didn't see you. All I saw was Jin pulling over, and I asked to see if everything was okay. Much to my surprise, it wasn't him I should have been concerned about, but yourself.
Regarding apologies ... none needed. We figured you were fairly woozy from your accident, and as long as you got home safe, that's all we could ask for.
I'm so sorry that you had to endure this, but I guess we'll chalk this up to road handling experience. Keep us informed of your progress, and hope you'll be on the road again soon.
Take care,
Ron

I heard about the crash! If we had our phones we could have sagged him in, really sorry about that. If I do It again I'll be more prepared. Can't wait to ride with the big group though.
Here's some picts for now.
Pete, thanks again for giving me a ride to catch up with the group.
I wanted to get there early to meet everyone but I left my wallet at home and had to turn back to get it. It was great to be back on the saddle again but that climb was a killer for me and being out of shape and carrying extra 30 pounds of fat didn't help.
Hope you and Cathy get better and see you at the next group ride.

Thanks Ron for organizing the ride. That was a great route and I'm keeping the directions to maybe try it again.;) Thanks Pete for the cookies. They were delicious and much needed at the top. It was good to finally meet the NorCal folks and all I can say is, DAMN, you people are strong riders.
Alain I hope you heal up quickly. That was quite a tumble. Looks like there is an angel watching over your shoulder today.

Man, that was fun!
I was fried, though. I got home, drank some water, ate, drank some more water, and discovered that I'd lost 5 lbs since yesterday (!). Most of it either evaporated or dribbled out on Rte 9, I think! I had never climbed Rte 9 before. SHEESH! When i got home, I looked at the profile, and sure enough, it's about twice as long as OLH! Luckily, not as steep. I was glad I decided to bring the bike with the compact crank!
Alain - Advil is your friend. Embrace it! I'm so glad those nice people came by and got you back to the start! About 12 years ago, I had an accident, and I was all for getting back on the bike and riding on. I was a little bruised, but I didn't feel too bad. It turned out I had a shoulder separation, which hurt like a muthah when the adrenaline wore off!
Ron, thanks for putting this together, it was a blast! Pete and Cathy, thanks for the cookies!!! Everyone, it was great to ride with you all, and I look forward to more such rides!

Thanks for the fun ride. Much better than Saturday's attempt (+10 deg. hotter). It was nice meeting everyone and showing the non-believers what a folding bike can do.
I'll get a front derailleur someday for it. Meanwhile, I'll continue to kick it down to the small ring.

Mike:
Next time you bring your folder, let me know, and I'll join you. I have a Dahon SpeedPro that would do nicely on a BF ride.
It was nice to meet you and Andrea, I regret we didn't have the chance to talk more. Maybe next time...

Oops, I forget your screen name, and his non-BF friend.

Thats me.:D Its too bad my friend was not able to complete the route. His bike was skipping cogs like crazy and shifting was very unreliable. He had to turn back around at Pierce.
BTW, Glad to see the Spinergy's were ok after that crash.;)
