per the suggestions in this forum i de-greased my chain and re-lubed with a dry lube. no more grinding noises, it's beautiful. the chain just seems to glide over the cogs...

also, another question:

can't seem to pull my wheel back far enough and make it stay to get my chain a little bit tighter.. is there a good method to doing this properly?? i know everyone said a half-inch is the best slack to have, but im at more like an inch at the moment.

thanks,
mc

i usually just flip my bike upside down and wedge one hand in between my rear wheel and center tube while tightening the wheel. it works ok.

I grab the wheel near the seat tube and push against the seat tube with my thumb. Lets me get it tight and keep it centered.

How tight are you trying to get it? Remember to keep 1/2" of vertical play in the chain. Unless your chainring isn't a true circle, not uncommon. In that case find the tightest point on the ring and set the chain to 1/4" vertical play. I use the same method as Rev. Chuck, works well.
