I wiped out on my Brodie a couple of weeks ago and had it in at the bike shop today to get it checked over as it didn't feel right when I was cycling it.

It turns out the left crank is bent and is less than an 1/8 of an inch from striking the chainstay on each rotation.

Apparantly the crank cannot be bent back into shape so I have to order a new one.

However, they said that you cannot order just one crank.that I have to get a set of two.

Is this true ? Why can't they sell them individually ?

They also said that there is a risk of the crank (FSA brand I think) breaking off while I am cycling. What is the true likelihood of this happening ?

That sounds like nobody knows anyone at that shop. THey should be able to call whoever and say i need this part and get it. Did you look on ebay? How much do they want for the set.

You should be able to get a single arm left or right for just about any crank model. Try another shop.
If the crank is bent severely there is a greater chance that it will break.

Some shops will go to the trouble of ordering a single crank arm and others won't. The manufacturers do sell them individually. You didn't say if your FSA is sq taper or ISIS, if sq taper then in a pinch any ATB and most road cranks with square taper will work though occasional discrepancies in taper specs with road sets can be a problem. If ATB should be less likely. Just match the length. If ISIS then options are fewer. Replace it soon. Steve

Call FSA at: 887-743-3372 and ask if they have a replacement policy. Most companies do.
