I just dropped my Trek 820 off at the LBS for it's first tune-up - it has about 250 or 300 miles on it. I plan on converting it to my "winter" bike. I just received a Cateye EL300 headlight and a red blinkie tailight that's going on it as soon as it gets back. I'm also looking at fenders.
I have a certain level of doubt that the LED headlight will put out enough of a beam to see by - if not I'm probably going to go with some sort of Maglight. My riding will be all country roads sans streetlights.
Besides the lights and fenders, what else should I do to get ready for winter?
* Should I stay with the knobbies, or go to road tires? My riding will be all on blacktop, but I'm thinking about wet roads.
* Who makes a decent and durable set of fenders? I'm looking at SKS.
Regarding the rider, I am planning on purchasing a couple of long-sleeve jerseys, plus a waterproof jacket of some sort, as well as a helmet cover. I also plan on getting a fleece vest. I figure I can build on that - adding a wicking tee-shirt under the jersey, or a sweatshirt on top if it's colder. I presently use those Zoic "foundation garments" under regular cargo shorts for my summertime riding, so I guess I can just switch the cargo shorts to sweatpants, etc. as it gets colder. Right now I don't plan on riding if it gets down to 32F - I'll just put on the hiking boots and the ol' down vest and go walking.
