Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Alleycat video...for those that don't know

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Apparently he made a Super Pedi-Cab... 2 bikes on the sides of a couch, pulled by the rider on the third bike. That's pretty awesome.

yeah...i've ridden with that guy. he usually shows up to critical masses....it's annoying. also, the same guy broke his leg or something and was still riding around town with an imobilizer on one leg and a clipless pedal for the other foot on a road bike. he was at the last CM i went to (over a year ago) and this doodguy in a porsche went plowing through the mass (which was about 20 people or less at the time) and so, with the imobilizer on his leg, he starts yelling and screaming at the guy calling him names, everything...the guy in the car like, bumps him or something and he starts screaming bloody murder. he wasn't hurt. he just felt like screaming. then passenger in the car gets out and tries to start a fight. turns out the guy in the porsche and his buddy had open beers in the car. someone snapped a picture of the plate. i don't know if anything ever happened to him...i think that night there were at least five different confrontations like that in the two hours that i was out.

that pic was taken on comm ave. right before the BU bridge. i like to call it "the intersection of death," because people just cut across all the lanes to get to the bridge, and no one can ever make up their minds as to where they want to be going....not a good place for a bike slowly towing a couch to be.

he also has towed a band while they were playing on that thing during a CM...he got a ticket, then he had a **** fit about it...surprise surprise.

i dunno...it's cool and all, but obnoxious as all hell. there's usually no one sitting on the couch, and he doesn't use it to make money, it just takes up space and frustrates people in cars. and he doesn't watch where he's going at critical mass. i think every time i went out he almost hit me.

then things like what's going on in the picture happen...and he acts like it's a complete surprise.

Man am I glad there are no allycat races and / or bike messengers and / or CM rides around here, I wouldn't dare ride my bike on the streets with all those ticked off motorists!

No wonder we have so many threads how cagers hate us... :(

And that is the problem? Maybe there are too many irrate cagers to begin with...esp in a congested city-center. To point the finger at just one element is wrong. While there may be abrasive Messers (I can confirm there is at least 1 in each city...:D ), cagers can be even worse. 2 tons of steel with a combustion engine and they think they own the road...but this too is a generaliztion. I am sure there are many good cagers too. Best thing: live the way you have to and accept the inherent risks in your decisions.

We can argue the cager vs CM crowd all day. Each has thier extremist, and each has thier good people.

But your last statement is the best. Do what you want to do, but know the risk and results of the choice you made, and be able to deal with it. To many people live in denial. The guy on the alleycat, while a skilled cyclist: he's a penis head for his actions. It's fun to watch, but the reality is beyond the fact he endangers himself (who cares), beyond the fact he pisses off cagers (adds to a mass anyway), but he endangers car drivers who may freak out and wreck into other people.... He makes the choice, but the others don't. In my humble opinion, his actions are similar to those of a drunk driver: endangering folks who have no choice to be in a situation with him.

But he is a kick ass rider.

the guy in the video who's just like, zipping through the city to some judas priest is REALLY insanely good at riding his bike. he's like 35 or something, and he's still a messenger. he does it because he enjoys it. he wears headphones all the time and just rides and makes his deliveries and whatever else he has to do. i don't agree with riding down a street the wrong way, but i've done it. i usually go down newbury street the wrong way every saturday night on my way to copley on my BMX ride. it's sketchy as hell when there's a pack of say, 10 of us, but it's usually pretty fun. but anyway...i wish i could be friends with that messenger guy. if there was anyone who i'd call "elite" it'd be him.

edited because i don't know the difference between twisted sister and judas priest.

Aussies and Seppos do have one thing in common, which is comforting -

Our love of bastardising anything and everything to make up for our lack of relative history. Some call it unfortunate. We call it a lifestyle.

I was in sydney and I kept seeing these crazy signs showing a biker getting their front wheel caught in a tram track and crashing. Thing was that unlike American signs these were detailed enough to show the biker going end over, helmet flying and everything it was a pretty horrific sign. Like showing a ped getting horribly disfigured for walking on a "don't walk." We should get those in Chicago.

They have trams in Sydney?

You think those are bad, you should see our TV commercials discouraging people from speeding in their cars. Car runs off road, car hits tree, person goes flying through the windscreen....
