RIDE DESCRIPTION
We have a mid-western Fooster (Aprilm) visiting us so it’s up to us to show this young lady a fine time and introduce her to SoCal riding!
This is an out-and-back social ride from Playa del Rey to Palos Verdes. We’ll ride along the South Bay beach bike path up and around Marina del Rey, then come back down to the peninsula. We’ll ride along the PV bluffs and see some stunning ocean views, then climb to the top of Crest Road, which overlooks the L.A. Harbor. Then it’s back the way we came and end up chowing down Mexican food and sipping margharitas.
NEWCOMERS WELCOME!
This is a great trip for BF newcomers. If you’ve never joined us on a BF ride, please come out and introduce yourselves. We’ll gab a lot, take pics, eat food and have a fun ride. And since it’s on a Sunday, it should be a nice recovery ride for you KOM types! Please take note the pace/skill level section below.
PACE/SKILL LEVEL
This is an easy ride compared to most BF events, but this is NOT a beginner’s ride. It is NOT a no-drop ride. You should be able to ride 50 miles comfortably and have group riding skills. You will have to share the lane/merge with traffic (at speed) in several areas, navigate through pedestrian/beach traffic, ride single file while maintaining pace, know group hand signals, and watch out for the safety of those around you. Please be cognizant of your own skill level before committing to this ride.
If you have doubts, please do not sign up for this ride. It is not safe for beginners to ride in such a massive group, considering PV’s limited road/path space and merging traffic. And it simply isn’t fair to the ride organizers, to the people who are able keep up with the stated pace, or even to other cyclists on the road who may have to navigate around you. Should you decide this ride may be too much, you are more than welcome to join us at Pancho’s for our post-ride eats, and we will undoubtedly welcome you with big smiles and lots of chips n’ salsa.
No hammering. If you sprint away from the pack, we won’t chase you. And if you’re unfamiliar with the area and get lost, it’ll be your own fault.
ROUTE SLIPS
The routeslip is posted. We will have to break up into smaller groups to ease traffic difficulties and regroup at points along the way. Please read the routeslip carefully.
CLIMBING
There is only one significant climb on this ride. We will go up PV East and Crest Road, which will have 4-8% grades for about 4 miles. If you don’t have a lot of experience in climbing, take it slow, stay within yourself and you should do fine. In addition, there will be quite a few “small hills” and rollers to deal with.
*** For those of you who want to stretch your legs a bit, there is an optional climb up Ganado Street (18%+). Anyone who does repeats will get a prize: All the chips and salsa you can eat at Pancho’s!
