I am looking for a bike shop for repair and maintenance work in the Chapel Hill area or thereabouts, and would appreciate your recommendations and experiences. Most immediate need is for a shop to change the drop handlebars on my road bike to some sort of flat bar with riser. May also need to remove the fork and install a different one. I do not know whether these are simple or complex tasks, so I need help identifying a suitable repair shop. The bike is a Club Racer, from Independent Fabrication, if that makes any difference. Many thanks.
The Clean Machine in Carrboro (just up the road) will come highly recommended. The Bicycle Chain (Franklin Street Cycles) on Franklin is also a good shop from what I can tell. The same owner owns both now.

Thank you. Both are quite near home, which certainly helps.
i'm a former wrench myself, and a 15-year chapel hill resident...
see rob at clean machine if you want a fixie guru. otherwise, either of the mentioned shops will provide quality mechanical work. i rarely need professional help, but when i do, i go to CM.
if you're looking to ride, pm me. also, durham critical mass is tomorrow ~5:30p. i'm (gasp!) probably driving over there if you're interested and available. see the SE regional forum here for a link to details (nicomachus.net?)
edit: wait...this is the SE regional. oops...i'm always in SS/FG.

If you're willing to work on your bike and learn, Chris over at The Re-Cyclery is willing to help...It's open Sundays from noon to 6. Great place to wrench on bikes and help out the Tarheel Country. If you come to Durham, the Bike Co-Op is open Sundays as well and those guys are all about single speed bikes...

Hi, Strack! !
Hope you're findin' what you need. I know you haven't posted much here before. Would help you if I could, but I sure don't have the local know-hows that these folks do. Good luck! :)

Thank you, Miss Vega! Just noticed you had posted in this thread. Yes, I have been given quite a lot of helpful information about local bike repair shops, and I am very grateful. After consulting with the staff at the recommended bike shops, the outcome, alas, is not as happy as I had hoped. The fancy new custom bike is going back to the manufacturer to be melted down, or whatever it is they do to unsatisfactory custom bikes. We are starting over, with yet another fitting, and another bike design. Grrrrr.
