I've just done a major overhaul of my bike, updating my 1984 Nishiki Landau from Shimano 105 (I beleive the very first Shimano 105 group) to 2007 Campagnolo Xenon with a compact crank.
I've gone from 12 speeds ( 53-42, 14-26) to 20 speeds (50-34, 12-25), have a wider gear range, don't have to reach to the down tube and adjust a few times to shift and the brakes stop much faster. Plus I have my frame with braze ons to attach a rack and fenders.
I took it for a 50 Km ride yesterday and loved it.
I couldn't have done it without lurking here and reading many, many posts and many of Sheldon's Articles.
What I learned along the way:
Cold Setting the steel Frame was scary but easy.
You can't always get a tool for a Campagnolo group from your LBS
Installing a Capagnolo Chain is very tricky (my LBS bailed me out here)
New brakes don't necessarily fit in the mounts in old frames
Setting up Indexed shifting to work was really easy, I adjusted the High limit srew and attached the cable and it all just worked :-)
Thanks to all,
Landau
