Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've just done a major overhaul of my bike, updating my 1984 Nishiki Landau from Shimano 105 (I beleive the very first Shimano 105 group) to 2007 Campagnolo Xenon with a compact crank.

I've gone from 12 speeds ( 53-42, 14-26) to 20 speeds (50-34, 12-25), have a wider gear range, don't have to reach to the down tube and adjust a few times to shift and the brakes stop much faster. Plus I have my frame with braze ons to attach a rack and fenders.

I took it for a 50 Km ride yesterday and loved it.

I couldn't have done it without lurking here and reading many, many posts and many of Sheldon's Articles.

What I learned along the way:

Cold Setting the steel Frame was scary but easy.
You can't always get a tool for a Campagnolo group from your LBS
Installing a Capagnolo Chain is very tricky (my LBS bailed me out here)
New brakes don't necessarily fit in the mounts in old frames
Setting up Indexed shifting to work was really easy, I adjusted the High limit srew and attached the cable and it all just worked :-)

Thanks to all,

Landau

Well done!

But just in case you didn't know, using a removable link is much easier (and cheaper) than reconnecting Campagnolo links.

Not to be a party pooper but if all you did to the RD was set the high limit screw you may want to read over this and set the low limit screw as well.

Which is much more important.

I adjusted the low limit as per Operator's advice, though I wasn't too worried about the deraileur mashing into the spokes as my Mavic Askiums came with a platic spoke guard that I left on just to be safe.

And I'll definitely use removable links for all my future chains, that's what the LBS resorted to to fix mine as they only had Shimano comnnecting pins. I had snapped the little post off the guide pin so it was impossible to line up the single pin Campy supplied with the chain.
