cyclocross in portland, maine

i hear there is a cyclocross competition in portland maine in early october. i have never competed before, but i am thinking of trying it this time. i am looking for anyone in the portland area willing to ride with someone new to the sport. or any first person knowledge of some good trails that i can try out.
