i used to buy the allthewhey.com brand, but i've just noticed that they charge $30 for 5lbs now. are they still the cheapest? is this because of the whole cost increase of milk business?
There is a local health food store around here that has whey protein in bulk for $4.99 per pound, and soy protein isolate in bulk for $3.99 per pound. I've found similar deals while traveling at local health food stores, especially at local co-operative stores. There are no shipping fees this way either. Good luck.

I get Optimum Nutrition Whey Protein Chocolate 10 LBS bag from AllStarHealth.com for roughly $65. I have used it for years, and love the taste regardless if I mix it with water or make a smoothie with milk / bananas and raspberries...
CostCo - 6 lbs for about $28.

Yep Costco. Available in yummy chocolate and creamy vanilla. They're actually drinkable if you mix them together.
Over here it's Sam's Club - E.A.S. 6 lb bag for $28. Vanilla and Chocolate flavors.

It's a bit expensive but the best (purest/high-quality) whey I've ever used is Jay Robb's.

$20 for 12 oz is "a bit expensive"!
FWIW, that's about 6 times more expensive than the CostCo/Sam's Club whey powder.
I really doubt it's 6 times better in any conceivable whey. :D

Very active or "athletic" individuals require more protein per day than more sedentary individuals. This writeup (http://www.rice.edu/~jenky/caryn/protein.html) is one example. A simple google will give you other opinions. The general consensus seems to be that really active people (i.e. "athletes." which seems to be difficult to define for some reason) require between 1 and 2 grams of protein per pound of body weight. YMMV.
re: the definition of an "athlete"
My own definition is anyone who averages more than 1 hour per day of vigorous physical exercise, with a goal of increased performance and/or competition.

Optimum Nutrition: 100% whey
it comes in something like 14 flavors, digests well, mixes and cleans easily and i generally like the taste very much.
10lbs bag at bodybuilding.com for $60 i think.
It may be of more reputable quality than Sam's clubs stuff.
Dont underestimate taste, texture and ease of use: if you dont like drinking it or you need a blender just to mix the stuff than it's not really a good value.
Optimum Nutrition has treated my body well.

Whey protein is whey protein. The difference between the expensive stuff and cheap stuff is the "whey isolates" and the other added stuff. A more expensive stuff will have more amino acids, gutamine and other stuff, and more whey isolates. If you want to be really cheap, just drink milk. Milk has whey and some casesin proteins in it. Or you can make your own. just boil the milk down till you its completely dry. You'll notice theres like a white residue on the bottom.. thats whey/casein protein powder! then just add water and put some flavored powder in there like chocolate, and bam! instant home made protein shake!!!
I used to drink a brand called Designer Whey. Worked well, the taste sucked, but i drank it with other stuff so it made it okay. Now I drink Optimum Nutrition Whey. Taste is a LITTLE bit better, but I like it more cause it has more protein per serving and more amino acids compared to Designer Whey. I get 5lb tubs off ebay for about $40. I can't imagine sitting through the same flavor for 2 months, so I spend a tad bit extra for the 5lbs. You'd save more if you buy the 10lbs.
Heres a good website: http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/proteinfinder.php?Price=20&Protein=&Carbs=&Fat=&Order=PRICEPERSERVING
I've arranged the list for Price per serving, being the cheapest on top.

No offense, but that list is worthless. It's sorted by "Price per serving", but the protein content in each serving is all over the map (from 10.5 - 42 grams). For protein supplements, it's the price per gram/oz/lb of protein that matters.

I have been very happy with Muscle Milk Lite, and it has both Whey & Soy. With a GNC gold card it's around $25-$35.

Ummm...no. The difference (not necessarily in price) is quality, and that's VERY important. If you're getting stuff from a place that doesn't have high quality controls, you can actually get a substance that has only 50% usable protein (to your body). There ARE differences despite the fact that each one has "whey protein."
The EAS stuff I use from Sams mixes well. I use a small bottle and shake it. Doesn't clump or stay crunchy etc. As for flavor, it seems ok, I mix the vanilla with fruit juice. When I use orange it tastes like orange julious. I don't notice a texture when using it.
The real key, instead of going by everyones subjective opinions is to look at the nutritional breakdowns, (grams of protien per serving, servings per package, Amino acid breakdowns, ingredients, etc.) beware of serving sizes and watchout for brand name selective language, which usually doesn't mean much. Claims by the manufacturer are hard to back up with fact. Every brand will claim to mix well and taste great. But that's also subjective to the individual.
If you find something that works for you, keep using it. Not saying to not try others, but it sucks to throw away $$ on protien powder when you could use it for bike parts.

I am missing something? Why would you boil off the water, to add water and then flavor? The white powder will also contain lactose, which you do not want and many people are sensitive to.
