Commuting - a recovery that is too graceful can look graceless

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

In some parts of the Chicago Loop, the tall buildings create a wind tunnel effect. Hillary and I were cycling on a road that went through a building, and there was a red stoplight awaiting as as we came out of the building, so we braked to a stop. I was ahead of her, and was out far enough that a very powerful gust of wind started to knock me and my stopped bike over. Instead of falling, I dismounted to my right, rebalanced the bike, and jumped back on from the left side.

Hillary: What did you do that for?
Me: [pause] It's not exactly like one plans to fall over.

(In hindsight, maybe this looked a on-person variation of a 'Chinese fire drill.')

He he. I share your pain (I think that's what you call it). I get a 'wind tunnel' effect in Surfers Paradise sometimes if there is a big easterly blowing in (the buildings are like, right on the coast). I've never actually fallen yet, but I've had to do some pretty spanky steering to avoid it on some days.

Them wind gusts can really knock you on a bike.
