On Saturday, September 1 the 2006 Downhill National Champion and two-time National Four-cross Champion, Tara Llanes, crashed at the Jeep King of the Mountain final in Beaver Creek, Colorado and was left paralyzed from the waist down. She was airlifted to Denver Health Hospital, where she underwent seven hours of surgery to correct massive trauma in her lower back. She also has a C-7 fracture, which was deemed stable prior going into surgery.
Tara made it through another surgery and is now breathing on her own and able to communicate with friends and family. Unfortunately at this time she has no feeling below her waist.
Her family will continue to keep us posted on her status as they learn more about her injuries. Since coming out of surgery, Tara, drugged and very happy, has kept in good spirit and has promised not to let this beat her.

Her family asks that you have as much faith as Tara does throughout this difficult period. Please leave a message on her Myspace page www.myspace.com/mtbtara as she really enjoys hearing from her fans.
Flowers and/or gifts may be sent to:

777 Bannock Street
Denver Colorado, 80204
A relief/rehabilitation fund for charitable gifts is currently being arranged. Information will be available later in the week.

Tara Llanes is an outstanding rider and a 1st class individual. One of the most down to earth individuals that I have ever talked to. She is a great role model for the sport. Felt bummed when I heard the news. It makes one really realize the risk we and the few that races for a living take every time out. You may get better through experience, but as experience and skills grow, so does the potential for harder crashes and worse injuries. None of us are indestructible.
I hope for the best for Tara.
