I recently bought a Specialized Crossroad Sport 21 speed crossbike. Its the first bike i've had in 21 years im 41yr male. My first question is I notice alot of black residue on the side of my rims from the brake pads is this normal or do I need better pads? second question; When im in the 21 rst gear I notice the front derailer makes a little contact with the chain.I asked the bike dealer about this and he said that was normal .somthing with the alignment of the chain in that gear. Does that sound right? it sounds like a adjustment problem to me.thankyou!

No. A properly adjusted front derailleur should never make contact with the chain. Assuming that you have properly trimmed the lever, the chain should be free from contact. That bike dealer is an idiot.

The brakes could be because they are a softer compound, or maybe it's because theyar are new. They many times need to be "heat cycled" like in cars, to a point. Give them a few rides and see if it clears up.

Both derailluers and the breaks will need to be adjusted after the cables have been stretched out. This is normal for new bikes. Usually the LBS will offer to adjust everything on your bike after a month or so of riding when everything works its way into place.

Hope that helps!
