I think the safety excuse is bogus. I also think the health conscious, exercise minded cycling population doesn't make up a large part of their customer base, so they could care less.

I used to work in the corporate office of a large fast food company. This ban is more for the safety of the company and employees than the customer. Walking/riding up to a drive thru window allows the customer easier access to the employees at the window. This access makes it easier to accost them or even rob the store. This can be also be done driving up if you were to get out of your car. Attacks at the window are fairly common late at night and by drunk people.

The funny thing is that riding your bicycle up is almost the same as riding a motorcycle up, but do they discriminate against motorcycle riders? So be sure to mention that if you're ever given this as an excuse for denial.

There are things the restaurant can do to prevent this. Most have a lever that opens the windows when the employee leans into it. When they step back the windows close. This device was designed to prevent attacks at the window.

I don't necessarily agree with this I'm just throwing out an alternative reason for the denial of service.

But as someone mentioned previously... It is a private company and they can set their own policies. Would you be in an uproar if you were denied a Big Mac because you weren't wearing shoes or a shirt?

There are a couple of things that i want to address...

But where's the grease? What I can't believe is that my water bottle cages can't deal with a 48oz coke.
Well, first off, how many times have you put a paper cup in your water bottle cage, i pop the tops off, and spill them when i'm holding them with my hands, it'd never work in my water bottle cage, i bump around too much.

That's cool about the place having someone out there. But how are the rest of you indicating your presence at the menu board?

Where i live, they use video cameras, this is for safety, as well as ease of use... Basically, there is a computer set up that beeps if a car pulls up, and the cashier can see the type of car, etc... in the monitor...
The easiest way to use a driver thru is just to pull up to the window, the speakers at the thingy suck anyway... And at my local mcDonalds, it displays my order on the screen for the other lane. -- lol :)

exactly, i think we should start a campaign petitioning mcdonalds to ban all cyclists whether they be goingthru the drive thru or chaining their bike up and going inside...absolute muck they sell..and tastes worse imo...
