I picked up a cool nexus three speed wheel set for an old Schwinn Jaguar, but as I suspected would be the case, the front axle is too large for the fork. I'm planning on filing down the axle till it fits, but I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a better way before I get started...

Your LBS should have a smaller diameter axle to fit those dropouts. Of course you'll need new cones & lockrings.

file the dropouts!! if you file the axle, you will goober the threads and never ever get the cones off to work on the hub. You will probably also mess up a thread or 2 where the nut goes, making it possibly impossible to even get the wheel in.

There is plenty of meet on an old drop out like that, loose the fat there.

You take everything off the axle and run a die all the way on before you start any modifications. File, back the die off, everything's clean.
