I recently came to the realization that I had an inordinate number of road parts lying around (including a set of Centaur shifters and Veloce RD)...so rather than sell what was already the majority of a new bike I decided to build something....
Since I already have a nice roadie (C'dale r1000 w/ Chorus), I decided on a beater/commuter/cyclocross bike to tool around on (maybe do a few CX races)
Basically the only parts I needed were frame and wheels....
the frame I actually bought from a fellow BFer (jasonguard....thanks! :) ) and it's a 1999 Surly Cross Check...should be here tomorrow...I'm pretty excited about it... here's a pic he took...
seems nice....i obviously haven't ridden it yet....i like how it looks though...

Allbas,
You can run a Shimano 10 sp cassette with 10 sp Campy Rear Der. and 10 sp Campy shifters and it shifts just fine. I'm running this setup with a 105 10 sp cassette, veloce 10 sp rear der. and veloce 10 sp. shifters. Works like a charm if you don't mind mixing parts, and you won't need a conversion cassette. I copied a guy that has this setup on two other CX bikes, so it's not some one time fluke. Lots of people like all Campy or all Shimano, and to each his own, but the steup I mentioned works like a charm.

I know...but I have a 9spd cassette laying around....it will work fine for a while (i actually had my gf's bike running campy 10speed with an 8 speed cassette for a while...worked great)
this is more of a cost thing than anything else...

Nice surly. The older 631 frames are the best.

Yeah, what was Surly thinking switching to gas pipe 4130? Oh yeah, profit. Greed. Stupidity.
I don't get Surly & Soma. In my opinion, each company's product is flawed. Surly and their heavy 4130 tubing, Soma and their crappy paint. Now if one of these companies would get a clue and fix their respective problem, I think the other company would go out of business.
Imagine a Surly with 631 or Tange Prestige tubing and powder coated to boot.
Imagine a Soma that had paint that didn't fall off when you blow on it.
I'm waiting.
Nice bike sfcrossrider.

Nice bike aballas.
This older surly is a seriously nice frame IMO...has a few paint problems (not with the base coat, but with the decals...) I'll probably do a bit of touch-up work on them...I'm really impressed with the quality of the frame though...the welds look great, not too heavy....really nice classic look..

just bought these tires Kenda Redline Kross Supreme 700x35c
I sold the Surly frame and Tange fork to aballas and it is really good to see my old favorite ride with a new lease on life. Back in 2001, I bought it as a complete bike from a posting that had languished on Roadbikereview's classifieds for months. I offered $300 and the dude was eager to sell. Although it as a bit of an awkward size for me, it had loads of quality parts (600 cranks, 105 dérailleurs, and Campy hubs, Mavic rims). The only real drawback was that it didn't have the original fork. Anyhow, I used it as an urban commuter. Any marks were from locking it to street signs outside my favorite watering holes. Six years later, I figured out that it's a 54cm and I thought it was a 52 all along. So, I swapped out the frame/fork. In fact, I downgraded big time. Got a Nashbar X frame and carbon fork. Still having that built back up. Anyhow, keep those pics coming. I'm so proud that my baby has grown up and may actually see a real trail sometime. Be sure to put some gorilla glue behind that headtube badge. It was coming loose when I packed the bike. A new set of stickers should be available from Surly.

But you don't, so you won't.
If you think you can fill that market gap between Soma and Gunnar, by all means go for it.

Tell me about it... I've been waiting a week and a half for some parts for my x-01 upgrade and it's driving me nuts... unfortunately the headset is one of those pieces, so I'm kinda of stuck right now. I also ordered a FD cable pulley in the wrong size, so I'm waiting AGAIN for that to arrive... AAAARRRGGGHHHH!!!! :)

It's done! Seems nice...rides/fits well..I'm going to ride it in to class/work tomorrow...see how it does...
Very nice - the red tires really pop along with the tape - now go get it dirty!

Man, the red in those wheels really just pops out at you! Sweet... definitely in need of getting dirty now :)

haha...i guess the general consensus is that the red pops...:D
I'm loving it too...I really want to replace the saddle with a red one too...but I'm not sure if that will be wise to do and use this as a commuter...I don't really want red stains on my pants if it gets wet...

did my first commute on it today...I love this bike...it feels great...so comfortable
I made a few minor adjustments to the bar angle and my saddle set-back...looking forward to getting everything dialed in just right...
Had a little brake squeal from the rear...made some adjustments this evening...I'll see tomorrow if it took care of it..
