Seems reasonable to me. Just make sure the derailleur and shifter are compatible with the cluster. And use some sort of chainguide on both sides of the chainwheel to prevent dropping the chain.
I'll be running a 42t chainring with a 12-27 road cassette in back. No long climbs in CX, so if it gets too steep, hop off and run. N-Gear Jump Stop on the frame side of the chainwheel, Salsa Crossing Guard on the other side.

Nice set up.

Nice set up.I certainly hope so. I currently have a road compact (50/34) crankset on it, it's such a big jump between chainwheels that I decided to split the difference. :)
The crossing guard was the only chainguard I could find with 110 bcd.
Road derailleurs usually can't handle anything bigger than 27 teeth, so you'd have to switch to a mountain derailleur to go 11-32. As long as the number of gears is the same, you're okay with the shifters. (Which means 10 speed won't work since 11-32 doesn't come in a 10 speed version).
