Foo - Yahoo/MSN/AIM

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I just use Trillian, which works with the main ones.

if you want to come play on irc there are a number of ways to do it.
1. the easiest and most disappointing option involves going to this efnet portal and logging into #bikeforums:
http://chat.efnet.org/
2. a better way involves downloading an irc client that works in your browser. for example, chatzilla works in firefox:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/16
3. you can also try out a full blown irc client like mirc or some alternative:
http://www.mirc.com/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_IRC_clients
4. or you can fire up the irc option on trillian or gaim.
in any case, you're going to have to join an efnet server and then join the channel #bikeforums.
and all the commands are very simple. just set yourself up with arbitrary user info for the startup, then /nick whatever
/server irc.efnet.net
/j #bikeforums
easy as pie made by someone else.

You should all just make an irc channel.
If anything is evil, it's IRC. Horribly elitist and frighteningly despotic in its structure. The method of communication is also ancient and inefficient. That it still exists is a testament to the power of elitist nerds in the worldwide computer community. There's very little I hate more than IRC. Mandatory bike lane use comes close...
MSN and similar chat systems have no user level differentiation, and are thus "democratic", unlike IRC.
They are therefore infinitely better and more pleasant to use, unless you enjoy being kicked out arbitrarily by an op with a god complex.
It's still one of the most versatile chat networks around. Sorry you had a bad experience with a trigger happy op, but that's the way of it. Sometimes we all get kicked. Sometimes more than one mode is set at a time. These are the ways of the things that will always happen. It's still the best thing going for group conversation that can be broken into individual channels/conversations as well as combining chat and file transfer.
Yea, nerds are owning your world.
Sorry you had a bad experience with a trigger happy op
Not just one! It was a constant thing. There were some days I couldn't even enter a channel without being kicked out AND BANNED with no reason I could see (channels I've never even been in before, for example). No, IRC is a complete mess.
Depends on the server and channel. Create your own for the discontent. Like I said, Foo can have a channel.

Uhm, you know you can seek out other channels and even make your own channel right? You can hold elections if you prefer your channel to have a democratic structure. Whatever you want.

IRC is VERY democratic... each channel can have it's own specific rules and such... yeah, you might get one op on a power trip, but other ops generally control that... or the channel just doesn't last.
I've only been kicked out of one channel that I wanted to be in... and that was because they objected to a different channel that I was in and felt it was against the spirit of their channel. It was explicitly stated in the channel rules that they would kick/ban someone in certain channels... and they did. I went on and found a different channel that wasn't quite as oppressive in what other channels they thought were appropriate to be in.
IRC may be very old, but it's still VERY popular... there must be SOMETHING there to hold everyone's attention. Personally I'm an op in 2 channels... we have very strict rules of behavior for the ops... anyone not conforming will quickly lose their op status.
i've got aim & you're all on a need to know basis.
if you need to know, holler via PM.

Certainly. But other channels are likely to be the wrong channels, otherwise I wouldn't have tried to enter the ones I did. And my own... well, that's pretty much pointless. It's like calling my own mobile phone from my landline...
My point is, that any chat system where all users aren't equal, isn't a good system. The old Yahoo chats used to be what IRC could and should be, but Yahoo chat doesn't work well anymore. Not sure what they did to the servers...
Don't forget that there's often another community, forum, what have you, behind a chat room.
