Bicycle Mechanics - anyone measure rims the Musson way?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I have some new hubs and am waiting for rims to arrive. I decided to wait to order the spokes because lots of guys think you should measure the rims and hubs yourself before using spocalc.

Is it always worth the extra time and energy to measure the stuff, or can I just trust what comes up in spocalc?

Also, the only way I've seen to measure a rim is in the Musson Wheelbuilding book.

Is this the easiest and most accurate way?

loctite a nipple onto 2 spokes. Cut spokes to 250mm
place spokes into opposite holes. measure how much they overlap, and multiply by 2 and subtract from 500
OR measure the gap and add to 500

solved.

Wow, that's a lot of work. I'm happy trusting Rinard, even though he's not supporting Spocalc any more.

I use Musson's method. It may not be the easiest, but it's certainly very accurate. It's basically the method FlatFender describes.

I use a WheelSmith stick or a yardstick tha has mm on it. Easier than anythig but trusting spokecalc to be right(For what it is worth I have never had spokecalc, DT or blue pig be off)

... I'm happy trusting Rinard, even though he's not supporting Spocalc any more. Not so! Every couple of months or so he sends me an updated version.

That's the main Spocalc Excel file (http://sheldonbrown.com/spocalc). The French version hasn't been updated, that version is no longer supported.

The mini version doesn't have a parts database, so it will work until the end of time...
