Hello everyone, I live in Orange Country and was wondering if someone could point me out to a good bike shop. I have a single speed bike and would like to change it out to a internally geared hub.

Has anybody done this? If yes, where did you get it done and how much did it cost you?

The Path in Tustin on First Street might work for you.

I would recomend Big Wheel Bicycle on Euclid and Ball in Anaheim. Kinda in a ghetto area, but a good bike shop with great people.

If you put a Nexus hub on it, buying the hub will probably be the biggest expense. http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/HU407C08-Shimano+Nexus+Inter+8+Hub.aspx

Thanks for the reply guys. Grumpy Pig, I was actually thinking about putting on a 3-speed hub but now I am not sure. The lowest gear on those hubs isn't very low and also, I heard that internal hubs are very noisy and make a sound like a coffee grinder. It seems like most internal hubs use coaster brakes (urgh!)

I have a Nexus on my Electra and don't really like the feel of it. It doesn't make noise but it has a unique feel. There's some more info on them here - http://www.sheldonbrown.com/nexus.html

Can you try to explain how it feels and how many gears is it? 3 or 8?

7. It feels like a slight drag, like a brake that's rubbing on a rim. The plus side is that you can shift when standing still so if you're at a light in 7th gear, you can twist to 1st while waiting for the green.

And how about the gearing on it? Well spaced?

And how about the gearing on it? Well spaced? It seems OK but I can't remember riding more than 8 miles at a time on it. 1st gear is real low, I can carry a load of groceries up a mild slope while seated. 3, 4 and 5 are good for most riding. I rarely use 6 & 7. You have to remember though that this is on a beach cruiser and I live in a flat area.

Thank you. So am I safe to assume that you are similar type of rider as I am?

Rides at a moderate pace.

Uses bike for short trips to the super market and other errands.

Where normal clothing when riding instead of painted on shorts and bright yellow jersey.

Yes, Frank is/does all those things. But you should see the guy. Not only is he truly grumpy, but he is so haggard-looking I can't stand to even look at him.

If I were a guy, I'd kick sand on him at the beach.

His legs? Like pencils. (http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1025/825752385_4b5150babc_o.jpg) I could snap them in half with my fingers.

Very elegant, an obtuse reference to another thread and an insightful evaluation of
Frank. Last time I saw him (Baldy lifts) he was even uglier than usual but then again he was wearing painted shorts.

You mean Frank was wearing his cycling uniform?

I'm just bitter about Frank. The last time I tried to chase him through Pendleton, his skin was sagging especially badly just as we hit some wind gusts. A flap from one of his manboobs knocked me clean off my bike. I would have caught and dropped him otherwise.

Thanks everyone. Usually I have to go home to get this kind of treatment.

I know what you mean, would it kill the guy to smile once and a while?:D

Oh crap! I don't have a yellow jersey. Do I have to leave now?

Is it OK if I ride with *just* spoke cards then?

I'm about to hit up my first LBS!! I'll probably check out big wheel bicycle and see if I can get advice from the guys there.

Anything else I should be looking out for and asking about to make sure I'm at the right kind of shop?

*ignoring the naked man* Rollers with a stationary fork mount? Now that's the kind of rollers I can safely use!
