Mountain Biking - Saddles

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey everyone. The other day I read this (http://ezinearticles.com/?Nose-less-Bicycle-Seats-Keep-You-Comfortable-and-Potent&id=165259) article on bike saddles and decided I really need a new one (part cause my current one is _really_ old, and part from paranoia from the article!). I'm primarily a XC mountain biker, but I've been getting into a lot of road riding/climbing lately (on my MTB). As I understand it "nose-less" wouldn't been good for MTBing, so would the best (healthiest) bet be to go with a gel saddle? Or something else? Thanks

I'm not a fan of the gel saddle. Your best bet is to find a saddle that fits you. This will help keep unwanted pressure off of the sensitive parts. The problem is that saddle fit varies from person to person, so, much like fitting a bike, checking out a few saddles is likely your best bet. As far as myself, I use the stock WTB on my mountain bike and recently replaced the stock Cannondale seat on my road bike with a Fizik Arione Carbon.

Yeah, that sounds right...seems like everyone has a different preference. Ever heard of a Rido saddle?

Seems kinda neat, but I'm not sure if any shops around here would carry it (or even if it's sold in shops in the US...).

Do they still make saddles with the center part cut out? I've been wanting to replace mine but havent gone shopping for one yet

Yeah, seems like there's a lot of them around...but according to the article they may not help at all (or make things worse even!) for some.

Actually I did think of that, but it seems pertinent to the topic to at least discuss it.

Everything I have read indicates that you want support underneath your sit bones. Therefore, you want a saddle that fits your ass in such a manner that you are sitting on your sit bones. This is my understanding of a properly fitting saddle.
Others who have more information on this topic can certainly provide some additional guidance.

It seems like the cut out would at least take some pressure off of the prostate. Thats gotta be better than my GT light that makes my beans go numb

I've often wondered how much damage is done by the seat, and how much by those ridiculously tight lyrca shorts.

Looks slick, I'll see if I can find this at a store to check out.

I went and bought the Specialized BG2 Sport today and went for a ride. So far so good! It's gonna take some getting used to though compared to my (very) old stock seat.
