So after almost 4 years, it's about time to upgrade my digital camera. Right now I have a Canon Powershot A95 5.0mp camera, which I love. This came was so under-rated and I got every penny out of it. I want to stick with Canon (unless you convince me otherwise) and I want to stay around $200 - $300. I was looking at the Canon Powershot A630 8.0mp since it's on sale right now for $203.99 at the local Circuit City.

Any opinions on the A630? Any other recommendations?

I really dig on the powershots for that price range.

dpreview (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/canon_a630.asp) seems to concur.

I do like the Sony Cybershots, but I think my favorite is a Fuji Finepix. They have the size and feel closer to an SLR.

I bought it upon the recommendation of a few photographer Foosters. I couldn't be happier with it. It's easy to use and the pictures turn out far better than my skills would predict. Any pictures I've posted in the last 2-3 weeks have been taken with the A630.

I have the A710 IS, 7.1 Mp and 6x optical zoom. Uses 2 AA batteries.

It's a great all-around camera but my wife let the kids "take pictures" with
it and now the lens has a big, deep scratch on it. :(

I have the A620, the previous version of the A630 (7.1 Mp). I bought it specifically to carry on my bike. It takes a really nice photo and is small enough that it is not as likely to be left at home as my other larger cameras.

$204.00 sounds like a good price, in fact it's less than I paid for the A620 two years ago. If I lost the camera, I would not hesitate to replace it with the A630.

I just got the A630 and all I can say is YUCK!!!!!!! This thing sucks so bad... My old 3.0mp camera was 10x the camera this is. Every pic I take is blurry and even if they come out decent, they still suck. My last two Canon's I was able to put them on AUTO and just shoot and get crystal clear pictures. This one give me nothing but garbage!!!!!

Wow. Every A4xx/A5xx Canon that I've seen has given stellar results, especially considering how inexpensive they are (I've seen similarly priced, yet truly awful cameras). I'd be very surprised if the A6xx series was such a large drop down [edit: And judging by some posts above, it isn't] in quality. Maybe you ended up with a lemon?

Post a couple of your photos on the Canon Talk forum at DP Review (http://www.dpreview.com/forums/) with as much information as possible. Someone over there will help you out. If you got a lemon, and bought from a reputable dealer, it should be covered by warranty.

I've always owned Canon...probably always will
I've owned a powershot A400 (first cam, basic 3.2, but took f*ing great shots), a powershot A80, and a powershot A95 (meh, not much difference from the A80 other than price)
Great cameras. But go try some out. Nikon is bringing some sick ***** to the table as well. You could also pick up a Canon 350D (Rebel XT) for pretty cheap these days...or a Nikon D50 or D70s............if you wanted to try out shooting with a DLSR (fun fun)

After trying every combo and option with the camera, I'm pretty sure I got a lemon. I'm going to bring it back to the store today and see if they can exchange it for a new one. If I get the new one, and it is still not up to my standards, I guess I'll have to get away from Canon. :(
