My toddler starts preschool next year and I think the most practical way to get her there, then get myself to work, will be a folding bike. That is, of course, if there is some way to rig a child's seat to one. Has anybody seen this done? With what kind of bike and seat? How did the bike fold after the installation?

Thank you,

Michael

I put a child seat on my Downtube VIIIH. It was a Rhode Gear Co-Pilot. I had to do some minor adapting to get the rear rack fitted properly, no biggie. Only thing was some minor heel strike with my kid's feet.

I have pics of the child seat on my recumbent, which is the same frame as the VIIIH. No heel strike in this riding position :)

Also, there's something called the IT chair sold for Bromptons. I don't know where to get this, though.

Thank you. I think I saw a video of your setup on Youtube or the equivalent. I am not sure it's the right setup for us -- this will be a commute through Manhattan traffic, and I would not be comfortable with the decreased visibility of the recumbent.

When I have a chance, I will look into the seats that snap onto the top tube, in front of the adult. These may be more folding-friendly than the bike seats on the rear.

The only front loading child seat for folders I know of is the IT Chair, made by a company in Portugal. Very expensive, though.

Also, you may have missed this in my first post. The Co-Pilot works on an upright Downtube folder, I just didn't have pictures to post....

Check out the child seats from Hamax. Here is the URL to the American distributor.

These seats are interesting as they mount directly to the frame and would suit full suspension bikes. They also make a discovery model that is front mounted and attaches to the front part of the bike frame. Perhaps their models would better suit your needs.

What do you think?

Sometimes when my wife needs a break I'll take both kids with me for a ride. I have a Blackburn seat/rack combo. I modified the mounting system to work with my Dahon Helios. I also made a hitch which replaces the front wheel of our jogging stroller which allows me to tow the stroller behind the bike. It has a couple of advantages over a BOB-style trailer. BOB trailers put the child at the level of car exhausts, and also subject the child to stones and debris being thrown off the bike's rear wheel. The jogging stroller rides higher, mitigating those factors somewhat. In your situation I would take my toddler to school in the Blackburn seat, and leave the seat at school with her while I went off to work.
