I'm planning on riding from Houston to Lake Somerville in October. I don't want to ride along Highway 290. Is there a better route?

I would suggest the following:
Start from Katy Mills Mall in Katy
Take Hwy 90 west
Right onto 359 heading North
Left onto 529 heading West
At Bellville take 36 heading North
Continue on 36 through Brenham until you reach Somerville
If you want to avoid riding through Brenham and on 36, you could take the following slightly longer route instead:
Start from Katy Mills Mall in Katy
Take Hwy 90 west
Right onto 359 heading North
Left onto 529 heading West
Stay on 529/36 through Bellville
Left onto 159 heading West
Right onto 2502 heading Northwest
Right onto 390 heading Northeast, go through Burton
Left onto 36 heading North to Somerville
390 through Burton to 36 is beautiful. Good Luck
