Fractures - Gersey. I have no idea where you could download it, but as far as I'm concerned it's the one. The guitar solo at the end is brilliant.

When i toured, i had The Breeders - Driving on 9 (youtube video) (http://youtube.com/watch?v=VSTTF7Wts5A) in my head for months. Its a great, ambling song for just cruising along.

Drivin' on nine
I sure miss you
Pass a motel
Looking at the piles

Drivin' on nine
Looking for the thirty
Maybe I passed it
Go another mile

And when i had to turn the afterburners on: Highway to the Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins. :D

What songs do you feel best describe the essence of bicycle touring.

IMO, I like a popular song if it makes me want to bicycle or to dance; many songs do both. Here are a few off the top of my head:

-Take it Easy (ran through my head speeding down the first mountain pass I had ever ridden)

-Country Roads by John Denver (heard in a West Virginia restaurant as we were within days of fininishing a cross country bike tour)

-Running on Empty by Jackson Browne (in agreement with Mijome07, above; heard while driving to a memorable century ride, "Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels"

-Going Up the Country by Canned Heat and Legs by ZZ Top (cool songs that always make me pedal harder)

Interstate Love Song by Stone Temple Pilots

When I hear that song, I think of riding on a sunny day in the Pennsylvania country side. Love it.

This song "Copper Harbor" (or "Cooper Harbor"?) by some small indie band called Y Lime? is specifically about bike touring.

Give it a listen:

I'll probably be singing this a lot on my next trip. Well, I am still in the planning stages, but there is a good chance I will be going through Winslow, AZ and see the man standing on the corner.

usually some environmental cue will trigger a particular song for me. if i hear a train whistle, i might get "folsom prison blues" in my head. if there's a big headwind, i might get "windy" stuck in my head. "highway star" if someone waves at me, "true faith" on a hot morning, etc etc etc.

i wonder what you all use to get rid of a song once it is stuck in your head. "iron man" sometimes works for me. singing everyone knows it's windy while fighting a headwind can be a bit frustrating.

Don't know about y'all, but my hearing ain't too good. No way I'm putting some tunes in my ear that will drown out traffic noise. Best tune in the world when 'yer touring is the sound of the wind in the spokes.

"Harvest" by Neil Young is a perfect cadence song.

There are so many great touring tunes depending on area, conditions, and mood.

Lotta good songs up there. One that comes to mind when I"m just riding around here is City of New Orleans by Arlo Guthrie. It's train-specific, but I like the descriptions of rolling past the landscape.

Break on Through -- The Doors

I've Been Everywhere -- Hank Snow

I'm Moving On -- Hank Snow

A few old train songs that I'm sure no one else here has ever hear of.

Sixteen Tons -- Tennessee Ernie Ford, but with some minor changes:

Some people say a man is made outta mud
A poor man's made outta muscle and blood
Muscle and blood and skin and bones
A mind that's a-weak and a back that's strong

You ride sixty miles, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

I like "Cowboys like us" George Strait. It's about motorcycles, but it still applies. I also like to listen to Three Doors Down". The cadence is good for me.

I was raised in a small, country Baptist church. A lady often sang a song, don't recall the name (song name, not lady's name), but part of the song was, "Lord don't move that mountain, just give me strength to climb". I think of that sometimes when riding these hills in the Ozarks.

I agree with you. However, when I'm alone on the trail, I'll hum or sing to myself. On the C & O Canal Towpath last August, it was usually snatches from Bach I was 'performing.'
