Southern California - Maintaining fitness w/o time to ride

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So I haven't been riding consistently in almost 2 months. Previously, I was going for 1-2hrs on weekdays, 3-5 on the weekends. Then, I started working 12-16 hr shifts out of town. And eating nothing but take out fast food. And then I lost my apt, so I'm living out of an overnight bag and friends couches.
I've gotten soft, flabby and weak. It makes me sad.
How do you keep in shape without having time or means to ride?
I've been running more than before (easier to do from a friends couch, and easier after dark), riding my mtn bike more (I think I can get a workout in faster on the mtn bike), and trying to cut back on the food (Activity levels have gone down, but hunger hasn't). Other suggestions?
Oh, and anybody got real estate leads in claremont area?

I run on a nearby dirt trail mornings before going to work.....out the door and back in 45 minutes. Beats cycling when you have limited time. :)
I agree that running is a great way to maintain fitness when you can't ride as much as you like. However, running is not really training specific for cycling. Try to run in the hills since it will make the workout somewhat closer to cycling specific. This is what I do. Just my 2 cents.
+1 for both of the above.

If you don't have time to maximize workouts you must ramp up instensity.. If you are running and still in claremont, you can go the claremont hs track or claremont colleges track and do 440 sprints sets..
If you are just looking for another apartment, get the claremont courier paper on saturdays.. With the colleges just coming back last month the pickings may be a little slim..
A woman I teach with was actually going to move into a studio in Claremont last week. She had second thoughts so that studio may be available, otherwise the Courier is good. I think she might have found the studio on Craigslist.

I had a place set to go on the first, and the guy just disappeared. Not answering his phone, apt locked up, etc. He sent me a text saying something had come up w/ the lease, and then nada.
Thanks for the courier tip. I had been checking craigslist, so another option is good.

the courier comes out twice a week, wednesdays and saturdays.. you have to call on new listings fast, especially when school is in session..
Claremont Wilderness Park is a good place to run also. The five mile loop is fun. If you go clockwise the climb is more gradual with a steep descent. I like to go counter clockwise and run up the steep part and then descend gradually.
