Foo - A Rumor, Cops, Drugs, God, Life in a small town.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
There is the meatiest, dripping with juice, rumor that is floating around town. I've heard it from three widely varied sources: from my mother via her bridge group; from the connivence store clerk; at the cafe where I eat lunch. Three highly secure sources for accurate news, and an interesting study on how information is decimated in the sticks.
The story has been the same at all three tellings.
A worker at a local for profit charity, that is owned by a local wealthy minister, was wandering around the building where he was employed while on break. He opened the door to a back room and was greeted by by men drawing guns and telling him to go back to work. The following day the worker was let go from his employment, angered he started making phone calls.
Later through information gleaned from one of the charity's drivers, the government raided the minister's properties, and arrested him for drug trafficking, along with his fellow conspirators the chief of police and the ex-sheriff.
The news has been silent.
If it is true, oh my god I live in such a corrupt little redneck town, William Faulkner couldn't have come up with a better plot. And if it's not, my god this town is full rubes so green P.T. Barnum would have felt pity.

It's Georgia isn't it? Where's Boss Hogg in all this?
Second source, in the cafe. Rosco is in the clear.

Small towns have some of the best scandals. Having been involved in litigating a few cases that came out of some of the small Texas towns, I've seen one or two good ones. I think the small town as microcosm effect makes any scandals oversized.

This isn't William Faulkner, it sounds more like David Lynch's manichaean take on small town America.

Im in a small town! and Ive never heard so many gossips my whole life.
Im always in the middle of them too, this comes from owning a popular establisment and being seen out there everyday running or biking.
I dont pay attention to them anymore but they are quite amusing at times, i really wish my life was as exciting as some of the stories I have heard about myself.

-Rumors are rarely true
-Most cops are cool but they're in a great position to be corrupt
-Marijuana is borderline sensible, depending where it comes from, anything else is stupid
-God is a myth fabricated by churches for the express purpose of mind control (IMHO of course)
-Small town life gets interesting at times.
Hope I helped:D

Told her not to do it on her bike. It's pretty much a dead giveaway, isn't it?

Wow, Allen. This is drama worthy of Red House. :D You'll have to keep us updated.
So far nothing. Seems to be a rumor. Don't know if I feel sad about that or not.

I wonder if any of these (http://www.atf.treas.gov/) stories is what you're talking about.
Or these (http://www.usdoj.gov/dea/pubs/news_releases.htm) if the perps were busted for drugs.

BREAKING NEWS: Angel Food Ministries raided
From staff reports
The Walton Tribune
Published February 11, 2009
MONROE — FBI officials confirmed they served two warrants Wednesday morning in Walton County. The warrants are believed to be in connection with a federal investigation into Angel Food Ministries.
The warrants were served at the Broad Street offices of Angel Food Ministries and at a business owned by Andy Wingo, former chief operating officer of Angel Food and current owner of Good Hope Food Company.
“We are fully cooperating with government authorities," said Ronn Torossian, spokesperson for Angel Food Ministries and president and chief executive officer of New York-based 5W Public Relations. "The Board of Directors for Angel Food Ministries has pledged its full cooperation to law enforcement in order to furnish any information requested. Attorneys for the Ministry are working with government attorneys to ensure a smooth provision of information while not disrupting Ministry operations and the fulfillment of food orders.
Andy is the leader's kid.
He wrecked his Callaway Corvette after dragging it through downtown.

heh... in a smallish town up north of here... rumour has it that hell's angels has a grow op, and the police are providing protection for their op.
story is that a couple of college kids broke into the op to steal some, got caught, beat up, then the police came, and arrested them for trespassing and breaking and entering.

who care's!
Where's Daisy and those legs?
Andy, the favorite son, was dragging his quarter million dollar hand-tuned corvette through town before he wrecked it. Bought a Hummer to replace it.
Poppa Wingo brought his car carrier through town loaded down with antique autos, not once, not twice, but three times just to show off. Money made in the name of God and on the backs of the poor. Before he started Angle food he did federal time for fraud.
The gun shop the church opened (seriously, it had a cross and shield logo) has closed, among other things they had a 50 cal and a FN P90, both fully auto, behind the counter. It kept strange hours when it was open, a random 10-12 hours a week. It was also always full of hard staring cops.
To work in the Angle Food warehouse one must tithe a hour of work a day to their church.
Sad thing, if they just claimed what they were doing before hand and did not try to screw tax law they would probably be legal.
Hope the Wingos know that Karma can be a *****.
Hope the Wingos know that Karma can be a *****.
Remember the scene in "Oh Brother" where they run Homer Stokes out of town on a rail?

They did film "In the Heat of the Night" just down the road.
We're more HBO than that though.

In 2006, Angel Food Ministries CEO Joe Wingo's compensation ($588,529) was more than twice the median salary of $220,000 that Charity Navigator reported for CEOs at nonprofits with expenses between $25 million and $50 million that year. AFM's expenses were just under $17.7 million in 2006. (http://ydr.inyork.com/ci_11681099)
Damn...
Damn...
Joe's compensation was high, so was his wife's, and that of both of his boys. The boys' wives are on the payroll too.
Guess the private jet is going to be left out of the equation.

Allen I'm a little confused. Your OP was a year and a half ago. Do you think the first event actually happened? If those guys were arrested back then it doesn't seem like it would remain hidden for so long.

Two separate events.
I'm still not sure what all occurred during the first raid a year and a half ago.
This raid has to do with documents regarding the Wingos' income and sketchy loans they have taken from their non-profit org.
yea...they sound legit
I'm not saying that Angle Food Ministries is not doing some good.
The Feds are saying that the Wingos cashing in millions from a non-profit is illegal.
And I guess I am saying that the way they rolled into town and started showing their ass it's no wonder that the FBI is raiding their offices.
Rumor around town now is that Angle Food is a Ponzi scheme about to fall apart.
