It occurred to me yesterday, while the blood drained into my shoe from the puncture wound on my shin, to ask if anyone dirt jumps with clipless pedals.

My bike has wellgo platforms and when I landed yesterday my foot slipped of the pedal and one of the pins impacted my shin. In retrospect, I did not position properly from the start and that was my downfall.

I've ridden platforms most of my life, clipless at times on a road bike, generally don't like clipless.

I'm curious if any dirt jumpers out there have opinions about clipless.

thx

good call -- and I never thought I'd need them...until I tried a jump I'd never tried before

May I ask which brand of pads you recommend?

thx

Its really very personal preference, its like asking me which helmet is best.

Alot of people find 661's offerings pretty good, serious riders like RockGardn too.
661 is generally pretty good value, oh, TLD is pretty good, especially the Lopes Edition

In the market for shin/knee protection too. But something for the intense downhill portion of trail riding that I can strap onto my camelbak on the way up. I've been looking around jensonusa and the soft breathable ones are looking good. Any input on essentially XC leg protection?

I would recommend clipless, but beyond that I believe you should also film said jumping while clipped and share the results.

I use Dinese shin/knee gaurds. I don't use clipless for DH or jumping. That's too sketchy for me.

DJers prefer platform pedals for a number of reasons. Obviously, clipless make no footed tricks more difficult. But even if you're just riding lines and not concerned with cans or supermans, clipless also make recovery from marginal errors less likely - if you land slightly out of shape and blow out of your pedal, you're not going to be able to save it as easily as you can with platforms, and you'll be complaining about your aching nuts instead of your bloody shins.

That is not to say that it isn't possible - plenty of BMX and DH racers ride clipless, and so do I if I happen to hit the jumps for a quick sesh during a trail ride. But if you are not comfortable with them or generally don't like them, it's probably not the best idea. I recommend either sucking it up and taking your licks or getting some shin guards. Some stiffer soled shoes with tacky outsoles (e.g. 5.10 Impact) will also help keep you from slipping pedals and enduring the resultant carnage.

+1. If you for whatever reason don't have them, simply wearing full length trousers has saved my shins on more than a few occasions.

Anything over your shins is better than nothing, may it be jeans or shin pads. Even if you have some old hockey shin pads (I'm a Canuck) or whatever, and you don't use them, wear them. They might even fit under your pants.
