Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Several of you had asked me to keep you posted about my son's recovery from his being broadsided by a pickup truck while riding. I'm pleased to say that I got him back on a bike for the first time and we road 15 miles on a local MUP. He was nervous and confessed that he thought the MUP would be a good idea - he'd be a bit nervous around cars. So, from where I sit, this is a big first step. Oh, one other thing... there is one short 10% climb on this ride that's about a half mile long. He flew up this freaking thing and waited for me at the top - despite not having ridden from some time and still not 100% physically. Youth really is wasted on the young.

Sounds good, in time he will be comfortable on the street again. I know when I had my bad accident it took me about 3 months to go from MUPS to street riding again. Now I ride with reckless abandon which probably means another crash is in my future.

Good to hear he's doing well and back on the bike.

Good to hear he is doing well and riding once again.
That is great news! Nice job helping him work back into the flow.
My son started to ride with my wife and I (on our tandem) on borrowed bikes a few seasons ago. He then bought his own road bike, took spinning classes, and bought a fixie. The first season he had his new road bike he went off the edge of a MUP, hit a good-sized rock and flipped over the bars. We didn't see any damage (other than a broken spoke). He was on his first group ride (without parents) a couple weeks ago (a year after the first accident) when he crossed a buckled section of pavement on another MUP. He said he heard a snap, went about 20 feet and his fork just buckled under the bike. The cro-mo steering tube was cleanly broken through. He got pretty skinned up, cracked his helmet in a dozen places and came to find out that he fractured a bone in his wrist. I'm sure he'll be somewhat wary of getting back on the bike once he heals (he's made no noise about getting the bike repaired at this point). We recently shared a lot of time together in this shared interest and I'm hoping that he gets back to riding at some point. If not - we'll have to figure out another shared interest.
I can appreciate what you must be feeling - especially with your son having had a worse accident than mine did.
Anyway, keep us in your thoughts (you're in ours)...
It is so gratifying to hear that your son is recovering. My son cycles all over town, day and night. I worry about him all the time, but what can you do with grown children? All the best, for you and your son.

Good news. It seems likely that he will make a full recovery in his own time. It takes a little time to sort out in your head the relationships between yourself and the rest of the world. We are after all the result of a series of experiences.
I'm not surprised about the hill. My kids are 26 and 28, ride about twice a year and routinely kick my but.

Awesome! It seems that you both are now on the road to recovery. :)
