Hey everyone,

If anyone actually noticed that I haven't been on the boards for a while, there are a number of reasons for that. I've just been generally busy and I just returned from a vacation to Las Vegas. However, the main reason that I haven't been here is niether of those, but rather that I can't bike at all right now, so I don't have anything to say. To answer your question, I can't bike because I broke my arm about two weeks ago.

I was up to bat at my baseball game in a very good league against a very good team. It was a 3-1 count with 1 out and no one on when the pitch came sailing inside way off the plate. I attempted to get out of the way, but it smacked me right in the arm where it's the weakest leaving me with a break of my ulna shaft. I actually got lucky because I had removed my hand from my bat. If I hadn't, the orthopedist said the pinching and the hard contact probably would have shattered my bone in several places and I would have needed surgery.

As it is, however, I've been in cast and sling for 2 weeks and still have another 3 weeks to go. What adds insult to injury is that it's my right arm which is my dominant arm, so I'm very limited in what I can do. In Vegas, we stayed at the Mandalay Bay which has some of the nicest pools in the world, but I couldn't use them. I also can't bike for these 5 weeks which is a killer, especially since my father, brother and I were going to have fun and be "Team Gran Fondo" on a ride through the Amish country that I will have to sit out as well.

Anyways, that's just my story and even though I can't bike I'm sure I'll stick around the boards during this time to have some fun.

Get well man. 5 weeks no biking, I think I'd cry myself to sleep every night, I hope you get well soon.

I know this is a winter activity but here it goes... ...get tapes of the tour (any year) a trainer or stationary bike and ride indoors (or in the back yard if you have one). I know that it isn't the same as riding on the road but if your brother and father can delay the Grand Tour you might be up for it some time after Labor Day. Good luck healing.

Erf! That does truly suck. I hope the 5 weeks go by fast for you. Good luck and get better.

You know, a friend of mine once broke his arm and had a cast made especially to fit in the drops of his handlebars...not suggesting anything, though...I hope the remaining 3 weeks fly by!

Bac, superman, and khuon, thanks for the kind comments.

Streetdog, I'm way ahead of you with the tapes and the stationary bike. However, the tour we were riding is an organized event so I'm forced to sit it out. The "team" was just going to be the three of us wearing jerseys from the Gran Fondo ride in Italy in which my dad participated.

Velo, I didn't even think about that but it is fairly ingenius. However, I would still need to twist at my wrist and that kills which is why the doctort put me in a sling. Hopefully I won't need physical therapy but thatr might be necissary.

Oh well, sh*t happens.

P.S. All this one handed typing is very difficult as well.
