We've have this toaster for over 15 years. It's a really cheap Proctor Silex. Nothing fancy. Just a dial to select burn level and a lever to convey the slices into the toaster. We splurged and got one that had the designated "single slice" slot.
Every now and then, it acts cookey. You can't toast 3 pairs of slices in rapid succession. Either you get this metallic groan then have to wait till the metallic thermostats cool down some OR you dial the burn level up a bit to get the lever to stay down; in which case, you then burn your toast if you are not watching.
Now, here is the funny bit about my devotion to this toaster. I am one of those people who likes gadgets. This includes kitchen gadgets as I am the cook in the house. I have sworn to replace every appliance with a Kitchen Aid when they break. I will buy things on impulse at times even if I don't really need them. At least I do this with bikes and bike schwag .. and underwear.
This toaster though, I refuse to replace. It's old. It doesn't match any of the other Kitchen Aid appliances and it sits in the corner and makes crumbs that I have to clean up all too often. It's cumbersome and temperamental. It's begging to be replaced, but I just refuse. I almost feel sorry for it. Like it will develop some kind of appliance jealousy.
My wife, the frugal one, is almost begging me to replace it. But I keep defending it: "But it still toasts," I'd moan. "Just dial it up or wait a few minutes," I sometimes lament.
Okay, I just wanted to share. I feel so dirty feeling so attached to a toaster.
