Southern California - Red Box/Grassy Hollow Interest Thread

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Okay, I was asked to do it and I know Big John (as well as some or all of his lovely harem) and Vertical Bob will join. How about the rest of you. Any interest? If you like this: http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=5235086&postcount=6 then you'll love the ride. Basic details are:
Route: From Red Box (must have adventure pass to park) to Grassy Hollow and back
Miles: 80
Elevation Gain: 8800 give or take
Altitude: over 8k feet, so bring caffeine with you!
Lunch: Newcombs Ranch
Difficulty: Not steep, but not an easy ride. Expect 6-8 hours for this ride (especially if we stop for lunch)
RickOCRR has suggested September 22nd. I cannot do that date due to the LA Wheelman Grand Tour Lite the next day, but he may organize the ride. I hope you all will join.
Otherwise, I'm looking into late October (as in October 27th or 28th), and/or the first two weekends in November (should be cooler by then). If interested, please give your date preference and I'll lock a ride date down. :D
EDIT: Do read this: http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=5248036&postcount=52 (http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=5248036&postcount=52). I must stress that this is not a ride for beginners in any way, shape or form. It is VERY remote up there. Having ridden with most of you wonderful So Cal BFers, I know that each of you know your abilities and comfort zone, but seriously consider the remoteness of this ride before joining. There will be no SAG.

I'm in for any date in October and November except the 14th!
I'm in. Any of those dates.

I can't agree. I sag all over the place and I plan to do the ride.

Baker to DV is scheduled for the 10/28, if it actually happens.

It's because you're one of the saggy, unhealthy long-distance types. :p

Okay, well, since I would like both you boths there (Vance and John), I'll rule out the end of October and look at the November dates.
Although another alternative would be October 13th...hmmmm.

If it's October/November, I might be able to make 10/6, but any later and it's likely I'd only be able to make a Sunday ride. If it's a Sunday, any weekend would do.
Do you have an address or location that I could put into mapquest? I think I had it somewhere last year but can't find it now.

Does that mean I have to wear clothes this time?

Anytime can bring cold up there! But I hear ya. Unfortunately, I am only planning what I can be at in terms of other commitments, and Oct. 13th or the other dates I listed are it!

No. Ride naked and we can tell the temperature changes by your "reactions" - win-win. :D

I don't know when I can make it from this far out (Sunday is generally a better bet, though) but I'll definitely be interested.

Well, if truth be told, I may put together a couple of these rides (one on a Saturday and another a week later on a Sunday). Bob loves to ride up there and will go up I'm sure every week if he can. Therefore, I'M planning for when I go up, but ANYONE can plan on a date I don't provide and go up there anytime too. Just PM Bob and he'll show you the way. ;)
With that said, of course I want EVERYONE to be at the ride(s) I plan for up there. Got that, people! :p:D

Well I was puffy and unhealthy before doing long distances. I guess saggy and unhealthy is sort of an improvement. I think.

No Sundays for me. Don't forget after the clocks change you could run out of daylight if you have any trouble. Late in the year I would also suggest checking with the visitor center to make sure the water is available. You could go to Big Pine for water.

I believe hunting season is from mid-October to mid-November.
My understanding is that Grassy Hollow is open weekends 10-4 as long as Highway 2 is driveable.

Yes, actually, but I haven't figured out the date. :o I'm thinking maybe October 27th. But I have to go back through the poll and then start a new thread. Thanks for the reminder! :)

So far, no GMR rides planned in October, either.
I'm kinda thinking about a "Ditch Work for GMR ride" on a Wednesday or Friday...
