Grandma and Grandpa lived without plumbing for many, many years. It was their normal way of life.
One day, Grandma told Grandpa, "Go out to the outhouse and check it out."
"Why?" Grandpa asked.
"Just do as I said, Grandpa," said she. He went out, as she instructed. "Y'out there, Pa?" called Grandma.
"Yep," said Grandpa. "Why?"
"Put your head in there and look down."
"Why?!" he called back.
"Just do as I say, old man!" she demanded. Pa was not one to waste time on things, so he figured the best way out of this thing was to go along.
"Ok, I've got my head in the hole," he cried out, trying not to breathe much.
"Ok, pull your head out," Grandma said confidently.
"AIIEEEE!!!!" screamed Grandpa. "My beard's caught in the cracks in the seat!"
"See," Grandma shouted, "them cracks in the seat need a'fixin t'day!"
(I was just reminded of this as I arose suddenly from an old wooden chair just now...)
