Sorry if this has been posted before. I'm pretty new here. Some of you may
know about Threadless. They hold design competitions for t-shirts and select
a series every week. This week they reprinted their Infinity MPG t-shirt.
I thought some folks here might find it interesting:

No kidding. I'm broke right now, but I can see myself spending a lot money there.

A $15 (minimum, not to mention S&H) t-shirt? Posted in the same forum as a thread devoted "Frugal Living"? A great paradox indeed.

My gf recently purchased that very shirt, btw

Hey TreeUnit, we don't like yer kind of common sense around here! :D I'm still waiting for the zero mpg and NaN mpg shirts. Or maybe architectural purple mpg?

i remember in an article in a men's health or men's fitness magazine a guy actually figrured out how far he could bicycle on a gallon by finding out how many calories of energy a gallon of gasoline had and then eating that many over the course of a trip. it flucuated wildly depending on what food he actually bought. he said on average though you can get about 650mpg on a bicycle or as little at 50mpg if all you eat is crystal and cavier.

Yeah, it's been discussed in this forum. The best estimates seem to be about 100-200mpg@15mph fossil fuel equivalent depending on diet for most people. The thing is, as far as environmental impact goes, an electric bicycle trumps this by another factor of ten...

thegeckoj

not to mention the fact that you must eat anyway, so you might as well benefit from it instead of a huge gut

On the topic of eating, ever since I raised my weekly riding from apx 75mi. a week to 100mi/wk. I've been sooooooo hungry. And I eat and eat. I don't gain any weight, still about 150lbs. ( yeah I'm a rail). I feel like I've been burning through food so fast lately. I'm always eating but still seem hungry. I eat well. lots of bread and grains, and starch.

Have any of you all experienced this? Maybe I need to go back to eating junk food every now and then.

Unless we overeat, we shouldn't. And that's a different issue imo. We can just as easily chop our own wood or hand wash our own laundry to burn those excess calories. Assuming a healthy diet, and no other possible source of exercise and utility, AFAIK 5 miles per day of cycling at 15mph is all that's needed to *keep up health. Anything else is just incurring the extremely high cost and inefficiency of our food supply.

*This was from a European study of some sort, pester me if you want the details. I'm pretty sure I can search for it again.

I couldn't eat junk food when I biked as little as 75-90miles/week or I'd I'd bonk while riding, and the same went for smoking/alky. Cycling forced me to eat fairly healthy.

I'm wearing mine right now, as a matter of fact. :)

Man, that says Tour de France guys burn 8000-10000 calories a day. I'd like to know what they eat during those days. I should do that :), I could lose soo much weight.

Easy enough...just find some very bumpy (mountaineous) routes and ride 100-200k a day on them as fast as you can. Or simply always take the bike anywhere and ride as fast and hard as you can, but this may take a bit longer than the 2.5 weeks of the TdF to have the same effect.

Just don't wear it when your driving and you'll be all set. :D
in case you wanted to spend more then the $75 you already dropped and all ;)

Funny thing -- the first time I saw that T-shirt was today. It was after I biked home over lunch, after I put the bike inside. I was walking down the block to the grocery store and there was a guy coming the other direction wearing that same shirt.

Maybe up your protein intake a bit? It stays with you longer.
