Mountain Biking - mongoose versus trek

hey fellow cyclists. i'm stuck in a decision to buy a bike to get around town while im in college. i dont need to tackle Everest, yet some rugged qualities are wanted. going off curbs and uneven ground happens alot.

i have these two options i came across while searching:

2005 Mongoose Tyax comp $200
2006 Mongoose Tyax comp $220
2007 Trek 820 $260


i know people are gunna say "trek over mongoose" but think about this. mongoose's tyax is one of the upper model hardtails they offer. while the 820 is Trek's lowest mountain bike available.

what do you think?

This made me chuckle a bit.

The Tyax comp is a low end pile. While the 820 is not high end, it's leaps and bounds better than the Mongoose. Not to mention the 820 comes with a better warranty.

hmm ok then. looks like i'm going to the local bike shop. so you dont think the mongoose is ok just for commuting? or am i even aiming too high? i wanted aluminum frame, trigger shfiters, shimano parts.

I'd still say the 820.

Is this a joke? Mongoose blows chunks! - except their seats(oops, saddles:rolleyes:), they're ok.

actually the closer i look at it, i noticed the 820 comes with RST omni 191 front shocks. arent those crap? also, its steel-framed. wouldnt i be better off buying a cheap aluminum bike and fix up components? how is there warranty anyways?

Buy new from trek, and they will take care of you. No bikes you get complete in the $200-$500 range have great forks.

Amen brother! Go with the 820. End of story. Trek is an awesome company to work with. I have worked at a Trek dealer for a little over a year now and have yet to see a warranty claim denied. They are such a large company that replacing a frame, or a wheel or what have you, is essentially nothing to them. But it will buy them a customer in the long run.

Now, don't get me wrong, don't think that Trek is just all about $$ and what not. If you buy the Trek, you are guaranteed a good bike at the price range, and a company behind the bike that supports it.

If it is just between those 2 then go with the 820. If you can spare another $30 or $40 then step up to the Trek 3700 and get the aluminum frame. Big difference between the 820 steel and the 3700 aluminum for the little price increase.

I prefer steel.....
