where do you guys get a hold of pursuit frames? They seem so elusive. I found a TT frame that looks interesting. Have any of you guys converted an old TT by adding new drops/forkends?

yes.
setting the rear to 120 mm, adding fork ends, modifying geometry for steeper ( shorter fork and rear fork ends lower on the frame than the original dropouts used to be) resulted in the best handling/fitting bike I have, despite the frame being too small originally.

What's the difference between a pursuit bike and a sloping track bike?

Anyway, my friend Marty builds these:

I just got one (albeit for too much money) on ebay. They actually usually sell real cheap. Search for 'pursuit' 'funny' and/or 'tt'/'time trial' in Cycling on ebay.

2nd Ebay. I seem to be seeing plenty lately.

I for one never feel compelled to bid though. I can't imagine riding one off the track.

How small do these frames run? I've been interested in building up a pursuit bike myself, but I need a 49-51cm virtual seat tube length.

i ride my tommasini pursuit everywhere right now, and yeah its not comfortable for long ride, but i rode it the other night for 13ish miles and had no soreness the next day. I am young and flexy though. the pursuit frames youa re looking for are hard to find because they are illegal on the track (with the 650c front wheel) at leas tif you are looking for the funny bike style that is so attractive. Keep on ebay, a dealer on there named Mozzy zhop or soemthing has many italian frames and thats where my pursuit was originally purchased and shipped to the US.

pursuit look great but all they'll give you is a back ache in the long run. It seems it has no real purpose for being in the streets because your not going to be going that fast to use it for its purpose....but then again an orthodox track racer might say the same for us who use a track back on the streets. o well do what you like.

Sorry man, ironically your thread inspired me to do another ebay sweep for pursuit bikes, and I came up with that. You were smart enough not to post a link, but I knew something was up... I've been hurting ever since I lost a 3Rensho pursuit (24" front) because it went over $900 for just the frame. Then the guy turned it into a piece of **** and put track drops on it. It's in the Jackass FGG Bike of the Day thread 3 or 4 pages back.

As for the bidding, you wouldn't have won anyway, another guy tried to snipe me. It was $34 only a couple hours before the end, then went up to $70 and hour before, then I bid a max of $126 with a minute to go, and employed the double-snipe. $126 was to get a potential sniper to try to outbid me with a higher amount thus wasting his valuable time and distracting him (which happened), but $350 was my max, which I entered during the last 10 seconds. The other guy could only bid once before the end, raising it to $188. Unless that was you.. sorry!

I'm going to have a welder friend of mine replace the dropouts with horizontal ones and remove the brazes and maybe the brake mount between the chainstays. Then I'm going to have it powdercoated white because I know where to get it done for cheap. I'm going to try to get a tubular rear disk wheel and paint it white if it isn't already. I'll use the front tubular and probably put a Selle Italia SLR saddle on it, Sugino RD cranks, Salsa Chainring, EAI cog, Nitto bullhorns and some decent bottom bracket.

Sorry for all the text, I'm pretty damn excited. If any of you have a 700c rear tubular disk that would accept track, or know someone that does, and would be willing to part with it for $200 or less, let me know!

It has vertical dropouts, I'm replacing with horizontal (EDIT: track) so I can make it into a track bike and use it at the velodrome. Don't plan on riding it on the street much, so no need for braze ons.

The guy hasn't given me a shipping price yet.

EDIT: $35

You need track ends, not vertical drop outs, to ride a bike on the track.

I'm not sure if USCF and UCI let pursuit frames in general racing, but dutret knows the true answer to that.

Or you can look for it in the rule book (http://www.usacycling.org/forms/RdTrkCx_rulebook.pdf).

I might put a modern drivetrain on it. Thinking 2007 Centaur UltraTorque BB / Cranks, 2007 Centaur Der. (front and rear), and a 2007/8 Campy Compatible Rolf rear wheel.

And I'm using those Athena brakes, not the Deltas.

Have you done a race yet? More SS/FG people should get on cross bikes, it's the hippest new thing!

In related news, I'm doing pretty much the exact same thing with my Basso TT (turning it into a geared bike).

I LOVE your Basso.

First race is next Sunday in Baltimore. I'm thinking about running a 44t ring in the front with a chain guard and the Sram Force in the back though. The 50 / 34 up front doesn't give me a lot of good options for cx.

You shuold do full C-Record on that.

You are ****ed because you want a cheap disk as a fashion accessory.
You are ****ed because you are putting any disk on an unraceable bike.
You are ****ed because you spent $188 on a tt bike and now are going to spend god knows how much more making it into a pretend pursuit bike.
Most of all though you are ****ed because you complained about someone ruining a tt bike by putting drops on it when the fake pursuit project you're working on is much worse.

I don't think you need track ends.
You won't be allowed to start without drops though and unless you are very lucky different sized wheels won't be allowed in mass start stuff either.

Unless you are actually good or someone complains though you can probably get away with an illegal bike in most pursuits just like you could get away with doping.

I got a cheap disc for my pursuit bike last week.
I spent almost twice that on a TT frame and am still putting money into it (trispoke front wheel among other things).

I don't even ride TT, and the bike may end up being too small for me!

I will admit that I do like the way disks look, especially on pursuit bikes. But I also am interested in why they're different from spoked wheels. And to clarify, I don't plan to race it but I will ride it on the track. I want to build up a bike that will be a different experience to ride. Maybe I shouldn't have made fun of the 3Rensho, but I do think that putting drops on it was silly. I don't know what makes it "fake" or "pretend" besides the fact that I won't (can't) race it. But it interests me, and that makes me happy.

You're mean, Dutret. Again, what is it that you would do in my position? What do you suggest?

Ryan- I meant track ends all along. My bad. That Guerciotti is going to be incredible.
