He rides a road bike.. give him a break!

I don't really know what a peloton is! I'm assuming it's the main pack in the Tour.. but I'm not really sure :o

I ride a road bike. :D

Even still, not everyone who's into the sport knows all the terminology... especially if they're just starting out.

That said, XC is a fairly common abreviation for "cross country" that's not limited to (nor did it begin in) mountain biking. It was used for running, skiing and even aviation long before there Schwinn Excelsiors bombing down Mt. Tam.

I remember seeing somewhere that peloton literally translates to "platoon" but it of course means squad or group. The definition I was able to pull up is as follows:

peloton [pəlɔtɔ̃]
nom masculin
(= groupe) [de personnes] group [de pompiers, gendarmes] squad (SPORT) pack
[de laine] ball
peloton d'exécution firing squad

My bad...thanks though. I wonder how many threads there would(n't) be if people like me would simply "search" before asking such obvious questions.
BTW I will be trying goofy foot on my next ride. Never even crossed my mind.
:p

No worries. I can't speak for others but I don't expect people to do an exhaustive search before every post with a question. Maybe a FAQ might help in that respect but there's no harm really. It's not like anyone is wasting my time or anything by posting about a topic that's previously been discussed... I choose to participate in the discussion of my own free will. No one is forcing me to read and respond. Besides, I was just lazy and since I knew about the previous thread, I just figured it would be best to just throw a pointer to it.

I am with you khoun. Searches are handy but really if everyone search everytime there wouldn't be much discussion. Besides opinions change :)...

Bigbike, I have been working on riding with my off foot forward and it is helping with injuries and overall control. Definately worth the practice.

Personally I don't really care if somebody doesn't do a search. I hate forum Nazis!

Hey Mael
I've also read that we tend to breathe on a particular side with the downstroke of the pedal and if you can control that and change it up it avoids injury as well. Ever heard that before? Just take a longer breath every ten breaths or so to switch sides.

I was thinking the same thing. A FAQ for the mtb thread with the most popular questions, if you wanna help me put one together that'd be great.

I have heard it. But I can't control my breathing. If I try I run out of breath very fast. I am a huffer. If I am not huffing I run out of breath and pass out :)

Same here. I've tried a few times but I end up getting way outta breath and it gets me irritated and I ride to relax so it's counterproductive. Maybe once I'm in "top" shape...whatever that is.

Can someone tell me what a Soft tail bike is?

It's basically a simplified full-suspension bike with limited travel (1" to 2" in the rear). See this thread (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32522) for further discussion regarding the differences between softtail vs longer-travel full-suspension and how they compare.
