"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Pcad gets more aero (no it never ends)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Seat forward another cm, stem dropped another cm. Oddly, this felt MORE comfortable.

Fortunately I am suffciently self absorbed so that this doesn't burn me out. That's YOUR problem. With this position, Zipps (but not aero helmet today) I was .5 mph faster on a day when it was very windy. I think that might mean +1mph or so.
Silvermine here I come.

correct.
not until you get rid of that floppy LS jersey and baggy white wool socks.

Never. There is only so far Pcad will go for the sake of aero, and that ******** looking helmet is the END. I feel like Marvin the friggin Martian with that thing on my head.

By the way I am not taking a giant dump in that photo, that's the spare tubular tire bag which will of course not be necessary in the actual TT.

Yeah, not much point to the aero gear when you look like your getting ready for the 1st annual antartica TT.
And dont look down with that helmet on. Also, you might want to try to slide it up a little further on your head to get the tail closer to your back.

There was snow on the mtn. passes in Orange Cty this morning desert boy. 49º at Casa Pcad.

Position is looking good. It's skinsuit time. It makes a huge difference.

Correct. It cut off all the circulation to Pcad's Procreational Zone.
Baby steps. Maybe I'll go skinsuit next year. I'm happy I won't be there on a 1974 Schwinn Varsity. Brings me right back to high school. Everybody rode these.

^ A Zipp disc is only a matter of time.
How does your helmet fit your back when in the aero position?

It's not a problem on the trainer. I'll let you know after I ride with it tomorrow. I'm hoping some passing pickup truck won't see me in that helmet and just spontaneously run me over. I would. I want to kill myself just looking at these photos.

Can you at least go with ankle socks under the shoe covers? Alternatively, cut the tops off of your favorite tube socks.
Use the Pcad standard here -- it is better to look fast than be fast. The lovely socks sticking out above the shoe covers do not look fast, ergo, lose them. I neither look fast nor am fast, so I am casting stones from a glass house, however, so my opinion should be taken with a whole shaker of salt.

I put shoe covers on to prevent frostbite. When I rolled out of here @ 7AM it was 50º. When it's <55, Pcad goes PearlIzumi on his Tootsies. This photo was taken by my trusty assistant @ 10AM.
Don't you wish you had a staff to assist you in all your BF needs?

Pcad. I will let you do silvermine as is, but in the future, we need to get you a different base bar.that thing eats up way too much wind. Definitely un-aero. The position is starting to look good. Let me know when you are ready to step up to a disc. The one that I have won two state championships on is up for sale because I got's me a pretty ceramic-ified zipp disc now. :)

When I see you @ Silvermine you can explain what a 'base bar' is. I went to college in the 70's, so to me that's a nightclub where you can do bongs of blow out back.

There is no watercooler at Cotsis CAD. We do however have the world's only basement office with panoramic mountain views. I'm sure they all hate me, and that gives us something in common. As long as they come to work each day that's fine.
Egads..that's a Canadian helmet.
Where is this going to go next?
One major issue with aero helmets is that they only work well in one position, and they make a huge difference. But if you look down, it's like throwing up a sail.
It's really hard to un-learn this, you have to learn not to look at your gearing, and the instinct that head down is faster. Zabriskie does this very well, he locks his head facing forward.

Perhaps to the Mexican factory where it was manufactured?

I agree. It's this exact thought that gave me the courage to finally venture out in public on my bike without baggy gym shorts over my lycra years ago. Now I couldn't care less.
Who am I kidding? You do look like a martian with that helmet on. We all look like freaks in comparison to the rest of humanity.

The resemblance is actually . . . quite . . . ehhhhhhh . . . striking.
From this point forward, I shall never compete in another TT or attempt to look the part. I might even give up cycling altogether now. Lycra really isn't attractive after all. Not on men at least...
