Looks like the tower bridge is closed for two months. Besides the I Street bridge (which kinda sucks for biking) does anyone know of a better route from west sacramento into downtown sac? The only other bridge I know about is the freeport bridge quite a ways south...
Thanks,
Richard
(hmm... maybe an inflatable raft is the way to go :)

"Tower Bridge to Close, Sept. 17-Nov. 20"
The Tower Bridge Pedestrian and Bikeway Improvements Project is widening sidewalks on the famous bridge from 3 feet to 10 feet. To safely widen the sidewalk on the north lift span portion of the bridge, the Tower Bridge will be closed to all vehicle, bicyclist and pedestrian traffic for approximately two months, Sept. 17-Nov. 20, 2007. During this phase of construction, the Tower Bridge will be locked in the "up" position. Detour options include Highway 50 and the I Street Bridge. Please plan ahead and thank you for your patience! Scheduled for completion in May 2008, the Tower Bridge Pedestrian and Bikeway Improvements Project is a partnership between the cities of Sacramento and West Sacramento.

Damn! Thanks for the heads up! The I-Street bridge is your best bet. I go over it occasionally but not often. The Freeport bridge, as you mentioned, is the only other option I can think of. I go that way sometimes just to add some mileage. South River road is pretty bumpy though. If you don't feel safe on I-street, just get on the sidewalk. I usually haul ass and take the entire lane so nobody buzzes past me.
Thanks again!
Yowch, I don't even like driving across the I Street bridge. Even so, I think I'd be more likely to take the lane and haul ass across than to take the sidewalk.
Thanks for the note, though, int. Didn't realize they were closing it already.

Go down Jefferson Blvd to Linden Rd. Turn left on Linden and ride out to the South River Road.
Go south along the river for about 7 miles until you get to Freeport. Cross the Freeport bridge and turn left. Ride north for about a mile until you get to Meadowview road. Go east on Meadowview until you cross Franklin Blvd. Going north on Franklin will take you back into Sacramento.
Or you can go another way.
Get on Harbor and go north. Eventually, Harbor turns into a road that goes along the levee. Go another 10 miles until you reach the I-5 bridge that goes over the river. Cyclists can use that bridge. On the other side, get off the freeway and find the Garden Highway and ride south for about 10 miles until you are back in Sacramento.

Yeah, I'll be taking the lane on the I st bridge... at least I can snicker every time I read the "Jiboom St" sign.

I used to live in Rancho Cordova and ride along the American River bike trail to downtown Sac, cross the Tower bridge, ride up past the ziggurat and cross back over the I Street bridge. Hadn't thought about Jiboom Street in years but it used to always crack me up too.

I cross the I street bridge in my commute to Davis from Natomas all the time. What's the big deal? Just take the lane and get across. The bridge is like an 1/8th of a mile...
Jeez.

I've done this. It's not great, but it's not as bad as you'd think either.

If you are going into Midtown or Downtown, my suggestion is to stay on Freeport Blvd. It becomes 21st Street at Broadway and continues as a straight shot right into town.
