Foo - Isopropyl alcohol and micro organisms

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Does isopropyl alcohol kill all micro organisms? This is 98% concentrate.

It gets gum off of bikes, I know that for sure. :p
Depends. Biology is not so simple. There are plenty of extremophiles out there that survive under unimaginably harsh conditions.

Cockroaches. Them bastids don't die for nothing. They live forever and ever. They will never be extinct.
Whoops. Off topic.
They're not nearly as impressive in survivability as many single celled microorganisms. PC2, let's just say that if your life depends on being right, I wouldn't trust simply swabbing something with isopropanol.
It kills many micros, autoclave or gas to kill all, but I have read studies that state it takes 7-10 min to have any effect on microorganisims. Remember that next time you get a shot at the Doctors office.

I wash myself using rubbing alcohol when I go camping.

What Jason said. Also, 98% isopropanol isn't necessarily better than your garden-variety 70%. Alcohols need water to denature the proteins in bacteria, and some bacteria won't be killed by the higher concentration as a result. That said, isopropanol is a moderately effective germicide, though it won't get spores nor most viruses.
And Making is correct- isopropanol does take as much as 10 minutes to exert germicidal activity.

Meh, it's good enough. Anything that doesn't die gets used as a workout for my immune system.

spray 409 on them. ive never seen a roach die quicker than after being sprayed with 409. amazing, considering high powered roach killer doesnt even touch them. they should make roach bombs out of 409. LOL gah.....so glad to not be in college anymore. roaches are icky.

Apparently not all microorganisms, but dollars to dounts it'll do a hell of a number on your brain cells. So don't be a cheapskate - spring for some beer and stay out of the medicine cabinet.

It may not kill em, but it will sure make em drunk!
OK, maybe not. :p
409 or windex will kill just about any household pesky critter, except Explody. I kept spraying and spraying, he kept on taunting, but by the end, he had a nice high gloss shine.

Sure you didn't grab the lemon scented Pledge instead?
I had just used that to marinade a steak, and was completely out. Whatever it was was in a clear bottle and the liquid was blue.

I don't know about blue liquid, but I do know you're not suppose to eat yellow snow.
no, not really.
you know when they use it to rub your skin for an injection ? ya... you dopers know
the most that does is clean the site, not disinfect it 100%
sure it kills some things off...but you need a large amount and lot of time
to disinfect with it.
hell, I was taught to clean the end of my syringe (before attaching the needle) with alcohol swab, and then
also the skin where I am going to inject, when I inject dope. all that did for me was
make my fingertips dry and split (and the injection hurt when not all the alcohol was evaporated)
so i just skip the alcohol entirely and just stab away. 1 year and >1000 injections later no problems
no infections....

There is 100% and there is "good enough". I would guess the real question is, how much is needed for good enough?

For 100% you need Chuck Norris. (http://4q.cc/index.php?pid=fact&person=chuck&id=4kpu5w2caxdn1dfjimf1gyuu056wk3vn)
Plasmas get rid of almost 100% of germs too. Bad thing, they also get rid of most stuff the germs are on or in.

Cockroaches? I find that a can of Right Guard and a lit match, held about 3" in front of the nozzle as you spray does the trick. Little something I learned watching "Wake Island" (and just about 300 other WW II movies). Flamethrowers, Yeah- that's what I'm talkin' about.
(Disclaimer- if you haven't figured it out yet- do NOT try this. )
Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) will kill most anything under the following conditions:
1. I has to be used in a 6000 psig pressure vesssel.
2. The walls of the pressure vessel have to be concentric within 0.005 inches.
3. Computer control must be used.
Can be built with stuff you have lying around.
Hope this helps!

As for cockroaches, I have a non-toxic, environmentally-friendly roach killer that is 100% effective when correctly applied.
It's called "Rockport"

The better question is, does it kill cows?
Bleach is cheaper. A 10% bleach solution will get rid of your nasties.

Too round of a toe to get them in corners. I go with Tony Llama.

some good ol' berryman B12 carb cleaner will kill roaches very quickly. if they are on the wall or something, they will hit the ground within 5 seconds. then they move around real quick in a panic then after about 30seconds they have pretty much given up.
there was this one though (roaches in texas are pretty big too, some are like an inch and a half long) my can was almost empty so i probably didn't get him good, but he fell and quit moving...so i went to get some TP so i could pick him up and flush him...i come back and the ****er is GONE! i was pissed.
You guys need to get off the computer and ride more, or something.

Uh, cause we're probably at WORK?!
Can't ride during work, but you can always BF!

We used to put our R/C cars on the kitchen floor at night, turn out the light, and wait silently for a while. Lights on, Death-Race 2000 for the roaches. Wasn't too effective, but it was a hell of a lot of fun.

How'd we get from micro orgasms to roaches?
PC2 - don't settle for the micro orgasms, go for a full size one. :p :D

No.
Hypochlorite (bleach) at 10% on surfaces or iodine solution if on skin.
