Well, technically my Allez was made by a subcontractor (Giant). However, Specialized has been in the road bike business for a while... back in '87 my training buddy had a Allez steel bike.
Great... now I kinda wish I had held on to my old steel 1993 Specialized Allez Sport (complete in American Flyers red :))

Color isn't as flashy as some of the other models, but it grows on you.

Oh I think the color is super cool lurker! That is a very cool blue.

Thanks. I switched to the red Michelin Hi-lites about two weeks ago. Livens up the bike.

Here's my 00', most noticable changes from this stock pic are upgraded wheels to CXP 33's from CXP 21's with red IRC Red Storm tires mounted that really pick up and compliment the red accents in the paint.
When did American Flyers come out, mid to late 1970's? Marcus and David rode Specialized Allez bikes in the movie. You have to love those corny gear shifting scenes don't you?

OMG F1_Fan you ride my bike!!! I am looking for replacement bottle holders in the original yellow, have you ever seen any of them? Night_Hawks have gotten faded down to a kind of lime green rather than the original hot yellow.
I'd love to see a close up of the colors on the down tube. I sent a letter to a specialized and asked how to tell the age of the bikes but the only said that the changes were in the down tube decals.
Fantastic.

My camera is in the shop  for the next two weeks. Sorry. If I can grab the digicam from work on Monday I'll snap a picture.
The cages are Specialized. They haven't faded too much. I bought the bike through the Pro-D program (dealer cost -20% woo-hoo!!!) used it in club races for 1/4 season then it's been hung up in the garage for 10 years. Sad... eh? Work, school, g/f then wife... no time to ride. Now that I have better priorities in life I've started riding the bike again.
Though, I wonder what the lifetime of those bonded joints is...
You might be able to get the age from the serial number... mine starts GB1...
If I had to make a wild guess I'd say that stood for Giant Bicycles 1991

Night Hawk has had the same life story. The head wrench at Richardson Bike Mart my lbs won her in some sort of contest he rode her for a year or two then in 1989 or 1990 he sold her to me.
I rode her for two years then put her in the garage for 10 years also. My wife got her out last November and got me back on her, life has not been the same since I'm averaging 200 miles a week, lost 35 pounds with another 30 to go and getting ready to take 'Hawk back to the Hotter than Hell in a couple of weeks.
I had the guy I got her from go over her to check out the bonding on the frame and that was also why I wrote Specialized and they both said that there was nothing to worry about he also said that there was no way to tell from the serial Numbers what year she was made. Although you might be right as mine start with GA9 Giant Shipment A 1989?
My son accidentally packed my digital camera in his stuff when he went to college this year. Guess I need to buy a new one, as the odds of ever seeing that one are slim.

There's almost always a way. Serial numbers are frequently not a sequential set of numbers. Manufactureres need to decode them when a faulty part gets returned so they can tell when, where and who made a part. It's likely that the person you talked to didn't know so gave the stock answer.
"A" might be 1990. It's common to use letters for year codes.
A - 1990
B - 1991
C - 1992
So G for Giant then a year code...

08-10-03, 07:40 PM
That might work I got her in 1991. so if the A signifies 1990 the 9 could refer to September. As I remember it the timing would seem about right.

I've noticed some white spots forming near the lugs on my frame. From what I understand that means electrolytic breakdown in the resin.
I may snap some pics and send them to Specialized for their opinion.

When did Specialized first come out with the Allez???
-Dan the Man-
Here is the photo from the Specialized website. I do not actually have any pictures of mine. I changed to a San Marco saddle, and I have Speedplay pedals, but you get the idea.
Another old school Epic Allez rider here. Just picked it up this winter, it's getting a new drivetrain this week: wheels, casette, chainrings & chain. About the only thing different from the pic is that red Schwinn seat has been banished and replaced by a Koobi AU Enduro.

I should have gotten silver bottle cages now that I've seen em on other Elites. Ah well, it's usually going by waaaaaay too fast for anyone to see anyway. ;)

It’s odd, at the LBS the ’03 version is more than the ’04. I don’t think the guys there noticed that until I pointed it out.
It looks like the main differences between the new and old bike and mainly cosmetic differences. Painted fork, different frame graphics etc..
Also the I think the rear derailer might be in a little bit different, but I am not sure – so don’t quote me on that one.

Great topic ockey53! I just ordered an '04 Allez Comp Cr-Mo with the triple (we got a lot of steep hills in Santa Barbara). Should be here early September. This is my first road bike in quite awhile. The big change for '04 is the inclusion of the Specialized Pave seatpost (a combination of carbon & elastomer - very trick). The handlebars get the new Specialized "Bar Phat" treatment. Same blue and white color scheme as last year but this year the frame comes in a 62cm as oppose to the 61cm of last year. The fork is now upgraded to a C4 (full carbon) same as on the S-Works bikes and on top of everything else the price is less than last years model. Oh yeah, and it's also reported to be slightly lighter than last year (probably the fork). I am also having the LBS put on a Shimano FlightDeck. I'm getting pretty excited just writing this... can't wait til it gets here. I'll post a picture when it does.
