Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Skiding issues

Okay I so I go to the Carytown Bike shop today (highly highly recomended if you live in RVA) to pick up a brake lever and here is why: It is now 3 times I have tried to lock my pedels and a foot slips out of my pedels. I use Crank Bros. cand-c and I am waiting to get enough money to upgrade to Time-Attacks. It is getting real old so I am finally putting a brake on the bike, sorry lads.

One more thing, while on the way back from said shop I go to skid and my damn chain falls off! They put the lever on to see if it fit (the first 2 they tried were to big or way to small) so I try that (mind you its just a lever and nothing attached to it), say oh ***** and manage to get my foot on my back tire before getting to a fairly busy intersection. So what do you think it might be? Loose chain? This problem has happened twice and it was ever since I brought my bike in to get looked over after I got hit, to find they put a half link on there without asking me, and I never got around to taking it off.

Why a half-link? Is this a magic gear bike?

If your chain keeps coming off I'd guess at bad chainline or insufficient chain tension...

I skip and skid on Candy SLs and haven't had problems.

Maybe your cleats need to be replaced or you are inadvertently popping your ankles to the side when you skid?

Either way, brakes are good.

Chains come off generally from a combination of two things. The first and foremost is bad, bad, bad chain tension. Your chain should deflect about 1/2" in each direction at the bottom and the top. Yes, people who ride on velodromes run slacker chains, but they don't apply back-pressure, etc... This combined with a bad chainline can effectively derail the chain. Bad news. Get your chainline/tension sorted.

I find it really odd they would put a half link in there and not tell you. They all ride track and I think most ride fixed on the street as well. That's a damn good shop, much better than Aggees in my opinion.

you should probably just quit. sounds like you're not having a good time

that's why i use clips and straps.

i pop out of my eggbeater sl's on occasion. usually only when my skid starts to fish tail and my feet tend to roll a bit. as long as you skid straight, you shouldn't be having release issues. you could always try and switch the orientation of the cleats to increase the clip out distance.

same thing started happening to me after i got doored. The problem was due to a bad chainline/tension. Check for that.

Indeeeeed..I rather ride toeclip+strap!!;) Get some MKS Syl and MKS toe clip/straps...

so first fixie and you're riding clipless without brakes and didnt learn to stop properly yet. @_@
