I noticed that the temps projected for Valley Center and Lake Henshaw are in the low 80's for this weekend. One might speculate that the temps on the 30th should be tolerable for more than just an early morning straight run up Palomar.
This would be a repeat of the ride Jeff organized in June. Rincon to Mt Palomar to Santa Ysaebel for pie via Mesa Grande, with a return either via Mesa Grande or Hwy 79. I think the full Pie Ride should wait for even cooler temps.

I'm interested, of course. :D

I wasn't suggesting that anyone had to do it. Last time some people did in order to minimize climbing on the way back. Jeff, for example had muscled up Palomar on his SS, turning his legs to burnt toast in the process.

Training? Isn't this harder than the Tour de Poway?

Nope...about 3,000' less climbing on the Tour De Poway.

yes its harder, but any ride leading up to a century is good training. I havn't done a century since January on the singlespeed.

Like you would drive down here for it?
Right.
Whenever you do buy a new car, look for one that can go south of Irvine without the wheels falling off.

AFAIK, you haven't shown up for a ride starting south of Irvine since the Stagecoach Century. Of the rides I've arranged, you have gone on exactly one, the one starting in Huntington Beach. Not that I'm counting.
Since I know that you are MORE than willing to drive down, the only logical conclusion is that you car is the problem. When you're driving west and you hit the coast, do you find it hard to turn left?

Hey Dan,
I might give it a try. I'm thinking of doing the Grassy Hollow ride with the Rebels next Saturday (9/22) so if I feel spunky enough for another hilly ride I'll be there. Hope you are not planning a start time earlier than 7:00 AM. Is Rincon = Harrah's Casino?

So, what type of climbing is there for this ride.
First off it's Palomar SG, then EG on return trip? Anything else?
Sorry, since I've never done a PIE before and so I can't ID climbs by road name. Thanks!

South grade, down east, Up Mesa Grande, Down Mesa Grade to 79 to pie, up Mesa Grande, Down Mesa Grande to the Lake, 76 up to the Fork, Down 7miles of high speed stuff from the fork. Or you can be like the nut balls of the last ride, they rode back UP East grade then down South grade then to Harrah's.
If you climb South, go down east, you WILL have to climb to get out of there, so you might as well go the distance from there.

In the original post there is a Bikely map of the proposed route - roughly 7700 ft over 72 miles. How can it be punishment if there is pie?
I think Chucklehead and I rode something like 11,000 feet of climbing over about 80-85 miles last time.

I've had to change up my training routine due to time constraints betwen school and work I can't get the time on the bike like I want. So I'm stuck with running and the gym during the week and i only have been getting saddle time on the weekend. I don't want to risk slowing the group down with what would inevitably be alot of slow climbing from me. Thanks for the vote of confidence though Dan, and you managed to not even sneak in a smart ass comment in there!

only because you erased your smarty-pants comment.... we all saw it... :p
and anyone with the name "Pitbull" should be able to lock(jaw) onto the back of one of the other riders and get to the top just as fast...
or you can start with the group, climb to the 79 junction and skip Palomar SG... if you are as slow as you say you are then you'll hit Lake Hendshaw around the same time as the people that do the climb... That will cut off a good 3000' in vertical gain...
