Ramadan Kareem to you all ---- that's a bit like Happy Christmas, just a cheerful greeting

It's the second day of the holy month of Ramadan to those who share the Moslem faith

The way the month is celebrated is to fast (no food, no liquid) from dawn to dusk.

This morning, 06.00 to 09.00 about 30 of us were out for a lovely bike ride. One of the best so far - clear summer morning, no wind, no blown sand which is quite a change from how it's been for the last couple of months - still hot, but a lot less than over the last few months

About 15 of the riders are Bahraini Moslems, and they didn't have any bottles on their bikes. People asked at the start - 'don't you need any water?' And, ' What about us non-Moslems - should we not take any water either - after all, we're in your country?'

Response was - 'Don't be daft - we're doing this for our reasons, you all ride as you prefer'

I understand it, I don't share it, but I certainly admire it. It was a great ride

Yes, very interesting, new things are often a mind opener.

This year during Ramadan the days are longer and hotter than other years. It's got to be so pretty tough going. I know I get cranky when I get hungry. I can't imagine going all day without liquids.

You didn't need to travel overseas to find taxi drivers to fear....they have lots of them in NYC:eek:
I just shut my eyes and prayed from the time I entered the cab until he delivered me to my destination.

Even without a cultural exchange programme, the Californian Mrs G and I (Yorkshire Brit) seem to get along ok. Oh, but then, we met and have lived mainly on neutral territory - met in Hong Kong, lived in Indonesia, now in Bahrain......maybe not a good model!;)

How long was the ride? Its pretty tough to ride in the desert w/ no water..

Two groups formed themselves, fairly short and easy, and a bit longer and quicker. All the non-bottle carriers were, for this time, in the softer group (even though they have some real hard riders among them).

Soft group, out for about 80 minutes, covered about 35 kms. Tougher group, out for about 120 minutes, covered something like 60kms. Everyone back to the pool - boy, that felt good. Then, for those not fasting, back to one of the gang's house for breakfast - including apple and blackberry pie:)

Absolutely! Just didn't have my facts on that one so I did not complete the thought. I knew it was in New England - wasn't sure where.

Mark Twain never got the trots in Mexico I guess. (I only point that out to give what Mark would wish: a sensible interpretation of any iconic observation-- including his own.)
