Road Bike Racing - If you could...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

What do you think the effects of inflation have on third world countries, and what do you suppose the United States and other first world nations could do to enhance and improve it for a better life for everyone?

Really, I would ask about how his wife copes with all the riding.

Heh. Or the more current:
"Why can't twenty percent of Americans find America on a map?"
Campy or Shimano?
Shaved or unshaved?
ipod or no ipod?
What bike should I buy?
What wheels should I buy?
Helmet or no helmet?
Bibs or shorts?
and just about every other dumbass question that gets asked in road cycling.

I know some of you are joking, and I hope the rest of you are. I might get the chance to sit down with GH and some guys from Slipstream in the near future, and thought I'd milk the teet of BF wisdom for good questions to ask. Y'all can do better!

Why would I ever come to BF and NOT be joking?
You're joking, right?
Who's the highest paid guy on Slipstream anyway? Why are pro cycling salaries such a secret? My theory is because they're embarrassingly low by any pro sport standard.

I think it's pretty safe to say we were all joking ;)
I dunno....if I met one, I'd just say "hi, how ya doing". That would be my first question.
Oh, and then ask "hey, you wanna race up this hill...." so I can see how fast they drop me.

I'd honestly like to know what their "defining moment" of cycling was. When they realized they were going to make it their vocation, and not just a diversion.
"Recent polls have shown that 1/5 of Americans can't locate the US on a world map. Why do you think that is?"

They get paid in burritos. This is still over par with the US dollar.

The last question I asked a pro cyclist was if he had fun at Greenville.

Man, sign me up for Chipotle for riding. I used to go to the first one in Denver when it opened up. I love those burritos.
Mmmm. Burritos.
Whenever I see a pro, I'm always asking, "Hey, how's it going." Then I get a feel for what kind of ride they're doing so I know how much legs will get ripped off.
I've ridden with Pat McCarty a few times this year, and I didn't see any burritos. <grumble> Why doesn't he bring burritios?!?
We had Chris Horner here for a few weeks this spring and he didn't bring any pregnancy tests! <grumble> Why doesn't he bring pregnancy tests?!?

If what I'm hearing is correct and I make no guarantees, next year you might be asking Horner why he didn't bring you any jeans.
If I could ask a pro cyclist a question, I would ask a few:
When you are home, why are you always late to local races?
Why do you always call my house so late, don't you know I have to get up and go to work before I train?
Don't you have to get up early and take the kids to school?
Are you going to get me in the VIP at the Sinclair party at Interbike again this year?
Actually, I have already asked those questions.
I think PCad's theory is correct about salaries, but there are a few guys who make a lot more than you would expect when compared to others.

Yeah, I was a little surprised to see McCarty riding a PowerTap. Maybe Saris is a Slipstream sponsor. Either way, it doesn't seem to be holding him back.

I'd ask them at what point they knew they wanted to make a living on the bike, or how they knew that's what they wanted to do.

Saris is a Slipstream sponsor. Although Vaughters was an early supporter of the SRM, Saris is a Slipstream sponsor.
What's your favorite beer? Good then, let's go get a pint.

I got to ride with GH a couple weeks after his TdF stage win. I asked him what gear he was climbing in up the Pla-d'Adet. Was that a good question?
